The Emmys Accidentally Gave an Award to Jason Bateman

The Emmys just made the same mistake as the Oscars and accidentally gave an award to the wrong person.

It all started yesterday when the 2020 Creative Arts Emmy Awards were given out during a virtual ceremony. (The announcement is usually separate from the Primetime awards show, which took place tonight on ABC.)

When it came time to announce the winner for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series, things went awry. The announcer read aloud Jason Bateman for The Outsider, but the screen said something entirely different: Ron Cephas Jones for This Is Us.

The Emmys committee didn’t address the mistake until after the next commercial break, displaying the message, “Our apologies, an incorrect winner has been announced. We’re fixing it now.”

The screen proceeded to display Jones’s name card (yet again), but it wasn’t accompanied by a verbal announcement. Despite the snafu, the This Is Us star handled it like a total champ. Instead of focusing on the mix-up, he gave a shout-out to his daughter, Jasmine Cephas Jones, who also won an Emmy for Quibi’s #FreeRayshawn.

Jones celebrated the exciting news on Instagram and wrote, “SECOND TIME AROUND, HOW SWEET IT IS. History: FATHER/Daughter Emmys same year!!! BLESSED! HUMBLED! GRATEFUL! HARDWORK!! FAITH!! JOURNEY!!! PEEKS!! VALLEYS!! SUPPORT!!! FAMILY!! FRIENDSHIP!!! BROTHERHOOD/SISTERHOOD!!! LOVE!!! LIVE!!! LIFE!!! LOVE. THANK YOU! (One) LoveandLight Always.”

Guess we learned nothing from the infamous Moonlight/La La Land switcheroo at the Oscars.
