Queen Elizabeth’s Last Diary Entry Was *So* On-Brand

In her diary, the queen wrote, “Edward came to see me.” According to Hardman, Queen Elizabeth was referring to her private secretary Edward Young, who paid her a visit to discuss the swearing in of the new prime minister, Liz Truss.

In his book, Hardman discussed the significance of this diary entry. “It transpires that she was still writing it at Balmoral two days before her death. Her last entry was as factual and practical as ever,” he wrote. 

Hardman continued, “It could have been describing another normal working day starting in the usual way—‘Edward came to see me’—as she noted the arrangements which her private secretary, Sir Edward Young, had made for the swearing-in of the new ministers of the Truss administration.”

I will say, I’m not all that surprised by Queen Elizabeth’s final diary entry. She was dedicated to the Commonwealth since the day she became queen, and she never stepped away from her responsibilities until the day she died. It seems fitting that she was conducting business until the very end.
