August 31 marked a solemn day for many around the world—the anniversary of Princess Diana’s passing. Each year, tributes pour in from across the globe to honor the late royal’s legacy and among those paying their respects this year was her younger brother, Charles Spencer.

Spencer, the 9th Earl Spencer, took to Instagram to share a touching message alongside photos from the family estate, Althorp House in West Northamptonshire—Diana’s childhood home and her final resting place. The estate, which is open to the public during July and August, welcomed visitors who came bearing floral tributes in her memory.

“Beautiful flowers, left yesterday by Althorp’s visitors,” Spencer captioned a photo of the Princess Diana memorial bench, which was covered in vibrant blooms.

In the post, he reflected on the poignant timing of Althorp’s seasonal openings. “We are open for July and August each year, by an arrangement reached with the UK Government in 1992. Strange to think that that summer season is bookended by 1 July—Diana’s birthday—and 31 August—the day she died.”

He also extended his gratitude to the team at Althorp House, praising their care and hospitality toward visitors. “My deepest thanks go to the @althorphouse team, who were truly outstanding again this summer—treating visitors as honoured guests of my family,” he wrote, adding a special shoutout to Marion, a longtime tour guide retiring after 40 years.

Just a day prior, on the 28th anniversary of Diana's death, Spencer posted a simpler, more intimate message with two serene images: one of a bouquet of pink and white flowers, and another of a still lake—likely the Round Oval at Althorp.

His caption said it all: “Flowers we cut this morning from Althorp’s gardens for the Island. Always an impossible day.”
