Mindy Kaling Opens Up About Casting BFF Reese Witherspoon’s Son in ‘Never Have I Ever’ Season 3

Mindy Kaling and Reese Witherspoon have been longtime friends, at least dating back to when the pair worked together on the 2017 film A Wrinkle In Time. And when Witherspoon revealed her son, Deacon Phillippe, was interested in acting, Kaling knew she had the perfect role for him to take on.

Last month, Netflix announced that the 18-year-old actor would make his official acting debut in the third season of Never Have I Ever. While sitting down with Entertainment Tonight, Kaling got candid about her decision to cast Deacon in the series.

“Reese had told me that he was interested in performing…and I only had this role that seemed really good for him,” she said. “He’s so super talented, obviously really handsome, but here's this kid who's been raised by two very successful actors and he wanted to learn.”

Kaling continued, “He came to set, he really wanted to learn from our cast and I just love that energy. He’s just such a great kid and…incredibly grateful and a really nice energy to be around.”

Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, who plays Devi on the show, chimed in and said Deacon was “really cool” to work with. She added, “Totally blended in with the rest of the cast, which was awesome.”

In the new season, Deacon will play Parker, who happens to be a member of the rival debate team. According to the streaming service’s press release, Parker will be “able to coast through debate tournaments thanks to his school's advantages and is always down to party.”

Can’t wait to see Deacon show off his acting chops in Never Have I Ever season three, which premieres this Friday on Netflix.
