Rule of Three: Meghan Markle & Her Friend Group Can’t Stop Wearing These Heels

Rule of Three is a new franchise from PureWow that points out nascent trends before they’re all over your Instagram feed. Why Rule of Three? Well, it’s not a “trend” until a few (at least three) very familiar faces hop onboard.

The classic pump has been a fixture in the sartorial zeitgeist since the tenth century (yep, that’s a trend with staying power). But in 2019, several classics are getting a facelift (i.e., you might want to consider adding a screen to your Louis Vuitton handbag).

For our first installment of PureWow’s “Rule of Three,” we explored the burgeoning #BathtubChallenge that has cropped up on Instagram. But today, we’re traveling across the pond to track a new trend that melds the traditional high heel pointy-toed pump with PVC. It’s the Gianvito Rossi Plexi pump and it’s a modern twist on the tried-and-true classic.

The Plexi pump is one of Gianvito’s new iconic designs that combines elegance with sex appeal via the transparent sides. The PVC is warmed during production to allow for breathable comfort that won’t leave blisters. The shoe packs a 105mm (aka four-inch) heel and will set you back $795 to $815, depending on the style.

This trend began, as so many do, with a little-known royal named Meghan Markle.

The Duchess of Sussex baffled royal aficionados when she accessorized a camel Oscar de la Renta duster coat and black LBD with cow-print (yes!) Gianvito Rossi Plexi pumps on January 10. It’s not often you see animal-print on a duchess, but in this instance, she made the Lisa Frank-inspired pattern and the clear plastic appear to be, well, classy. (She is Meghan Markle, after all.)

It only took a few months before the trend infiltrated Markle’s friend group and made its way onto the feet of fellow fashion icon, Amal Clooney.

The 41-year-old international law and human rights barrister stepped out on the arm of her husband, Mr. Amal Clooney, in Los Angeles for the premiere of his new show Catch-22. For the occasion, Amal wore an emerald green one-shoulder Oscar de la Renta cocktail dress with purple jewelry, a black Jimmy Choo clutch and black leather Gianvito Rossi Plexi pumps, proving you don’t need a cow-print pop to make a statement.

Next to the Plexi party? Yet another close confidante of Markle’s.

Chopra loves the Plexi pump so much she’s worn the style not once but a handful of times. On May 9, the 36-year-old Quantico actress attended the launch of Vinyard Vines for Target in New York City, sporting a white leather version of the peek-a-boo heel. Three days later, she paired a nude iteration with a saucy leg slit while accompanying her hubby, Nick Jonas, to his Jo-Bro Saturday Night Live performance.

When a duchess and her two close friends wear the same pump, you can almost sense its newfound icon status, akin to the Louboutin or Valentino Rockstud. We look forward to seeing more of you, Plexi pump.
