Queen Camilla almost had a fashion mishap as she attended the first day of this year’s Royal Ascot, but luckily, one of her best friends was there to offer moral support.

The Queen arrived at Ascot Racecourse on Tuesday afternoon wearing a green coatdress and matching Philip Treacy hat, which was the source of her grief, according to lip-reading expert Nicola Hickling (who spoke on behalf of Slingo).

As she encountered strong winds at the event, Camilla apparently made panicked remarks about her hat nearly flying away while having a conversation with confidant Lady Sarah Keswick. According to Hickling, Charles even took note of his wife’s hat struggles. “Didn’t she get the control on it?” Hickling reports the King saying to Prince Faisal bin Salman Al Saud. At that point, the Queen was still clutching her hat, which prompted her to say to Lady Sarah, “Oh my goodness, if that wind blows any stronger, my hat will blow away!”

Still battling with the hat later during her carriage ride, Queen Camilla reportedly wondered aloud about whether she should risk a wave, saying, “A quick wave and back to my hat? Should I let go? I can’t.” Then, as the carriage rounded the bend, both Camilla and Charles gave a collective “oooh,” reacting to the gust. This caused Prince Faisal to erupt into laughter, asking, “Are you frightened that your hat will blow off?” Immediately afterwards, Camilla added, “This wind is causing a frenzy.”

Amid all this chaos, Charles could be seen joking that it was his third time in a carriage within the week, according to the lip reading expert. He was, of course, referencing Trooping the Colour that took place this past weekend. Eventually, the harsh winds stopped, which meant no more hat troubles for the Queen. At least she handled things like a pro.
