Kate Middleton Wowed in Yellow at a Royal Garden Party—and It Instantly Reminded Me of 3 Days Earlier

Butter yellow is on trend

Zara Tindall looked elegant and stylish when she stepped out in a butter yellow dress this past weekend. The royal equestrian donned a flattering Leo Lin “Aurélie” Appliqué mini dress with gold pumps while visiting The Belfry Hotel & Resort with her husband, Mike Tindall. Then, just three days later, another royal followed suit and donned the same color.

In case you missed it, Princess Catherine appeared alongside her husband, Prince William, for this year's Garden Party at Buckingham Palace, marking her official return after a two-year hiatus. For the occasion, she wore a sunny yellow dress by Emilia Wickstead and a Philip Treacy hat. While I was impressed by her intricate new hairstyle, her monochromatic outfit instantly reminded me of her cousin-in-law's Spring-themed ensemble.

Princess Anne’s daughter looked radiant in her belted dress and kept her accessories to a minimum while stepping out with her husband. Meanwhile, Middleton stunned in a yellow dress designed by Emilia Wickstead, pairing the number with a matching Philip Treacy hat and nude pumps. (If the hat looks familiar, it's because the princess previously wore it at Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s wedding in 2018.)

From Timothée Chalamet's butter yellow Oscars look to Sabrina Carpenter's unforgettable yellow dress at the 2024 Governors Ball Music Festival, it's safe to say the sunny hue is having a moment.

While chatting with Forbes in April, Nivek Remas co-founder Samer Shaath explained why so many people are gravitating to the color, which he describes as a softer, more approachable take on yellow.

He revealed, “Butter yellow embodies warmth, comfort, and nostalgia—qualities people are craving right now. Unlike bolder yellows that energize, this softer shade has a grounding effect, fostering a sense of calm and happiness. It subconsciously reminds us of sunlight, fresh blooms, and cozy kitchens—elements that make a space feel welcoming and serene.”

CB2's senior director of design and development, Andrea Erman, also noted that this shade “brings a sense of optimism without being overwhelming, offering a unique balance of brightness and warmth. As people crave environments that feel uplifting yet comforting, butter yellow stands out as a perfect choice to help achieve that.”

It makes total sense, then, that Middleton and Tindall would opt for chic outfits with a positive and brightening effect.
