Summer break is officially over for the Prince and Princess of Wales: After a seven-week hiatus from royal duties, Prince William and Kate Middleton both stepped out in London for a cause close to Kate’s heart. The Princess of Wales is patron of the Natural History Museum and this was her first chance to get a first-hand look at the cultural institution’s newly re-opened gardens. If only the weather chose to cooperate.

Her hair *is* blonde!

Providing confirmation that, yes, her hair is blonde, Kate—with William by her side—braved a heavy (and unexpected) downpour as she turned out to view the transformed outdoor space. She’s long been a proponent of the positive impact of the outdoors on everyone, but especially children. Back in February 2020, during an interview on the Happy Mum, Happy Baby podcast, hosted by Giovanna Fletcher, Kate shared: “As children, we spent a lot of time outside, and it’s something I’m really passionate about. I think it’s so great for physical and mental wellbeing and laying foundations.”

The Princess of Wales also recently launched a seasonal video series that highlights the impact of Mother Nature on our lives. (In fact, she’s shared that time spent outdoors was something that provided her great solace throughout her cancer treatment.) Today’s royal engagement offered an opportunity for a number of her most valued causes to align.

Despite the weather, the joint appearance seemed to be a great success with both Kate and William joining school children who were using the space as an outdoor classroom, but also laughing along as they raced to make sure everyone had umbrella cover when the rain picked up. While there, the Prince and Princess of Wales also learned how the gardens serve as a living laboratory, where visitors and scientists can view wildlife in an urban setting.
Their return to official duties comes just one day after sending their three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, back to the classroom for another year at Lambrook School.
Back to school, back to royal work—there’s no greater sign that September is here.
