John Legend & Kelly Clarkson Are Dropping a 2019 Version of ‘Baby, It’s Cold Outside’

Soon, the weather outside will be frightful, but one holiday song’s lyrics will be a whole lot more delightful thanks to John Legend and Kelly Clarkson.

Legend just announced via his Vanity Fair November cover story that he and his fellow The Voice judge are teaming up to release an updated version of the classic holiday hit, “Baby, It’s Cold Outside.” Why? Well, if you’ve listened to the song recently, the lyrics are pretty inappropriate in the 2019 landscape.

The 40-year-old EGOT winner explained that the new and improved “Baby, It’s Cold Outside,” will feature lyrics written by himself and Insecure’s Natasha Rothwell. Vanity Fair described the cover as being “every bit as fun and swinging as the original and its newfound sensitivity feels genuine, not performative.”

Some of the revamped lyrics include couplets like “What will my friends think/I think they should rejoice/If I have one more drink/ It’s your body, your choice.” Well, that’s definitely different than the uncomfortably persistent lyrics in the original version.

Growing up, holiday songs were a big portion of Legend’s life. He and his family used to gather around his paternal grandmother’s piano and sing the classics.

Now, he’s putting a woker spin on a song we’ve grown to know, love and be made to feel pretty awkward by. Bravo to Legend, Clarkson and Rothwell for bringing “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” into this millennium.

The “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” redux will be a part of Legend’s new deluxe holiday album, A Legendary Christmas, which is available for pre-order at Amazon for $14 and will become available on November 8.

We can’t wait to play it on repeat all holiday season long.
