My jaw dropped

In Severance season two, fans saw a different side of Devon Scout-Hale as she embarked on a mission to rescue her sister-in-law, Gemma. Actress and writer Jen Tullock does a phenomenal job of bringing the complex character to life, revealing that there's much more to the caring and protective sister we saw in season one. But after seeing her grace my screen for two seasons, it dawned on me that I've definitely seen her before.

I couldn't put my finger on where I'd seen the actress, but after a quick Google search, I remembered that she also played Anita St. Pierre in the HBO legal drama, Perry Mason.

If you're unfamiliar with the series, which is a reboot of the famous '50s drama, it depicts the origin story of a well-known defense lawyer named Perry Mason during the 1930s. Tullock joined the season two cast as Anita, a self-made screenwriter and the love interest of Juliet Rylance's Della Street, a legal secretary. And Tullock has been quite vocal about why the LGBT storyline has meant so much to her.

During her chat with The Daily Beast in 2023, Tullock said, "I haven't gotten to play many queer characters as a gay person, so that was personally special."

Referring to the increased acceptance of the LGBTQ+ community over time, Tullock added, “I'm so grateful for the reminder of my foremothers—for lack of a better term. I hope [this] is a reminder of how far we've come but also how far we still have to go in making sure that any person under the queer banner is able to live loudly and safely.”

Although the stylish Anita is quite the deviation from Devon on Severance, they do have one thing in common. While chatting with Variety, Tullock confirmed that the latter character identifies as queer.

She said, "I didn’t have some grand plan to normalize queer women in straight relationships, but that also accidentally became a conversation that I was grateful for. But I also was like, 'Dan, is this OK?' I didn’t mean to out [her]; I had no idea the internet was going to explode with headlines. But yes, she’s absolutely queer and she absolutely loves her husband, and both of those things can be true."

In addition to Perry Mason, Tullock has also appeared in shows like The L Word: Generation Q, Curb Your Enthusiasm and SMILF. You might also recognize her as Wendy from the 2022 musical comedy, Spirited, and she has written and starred in the 2019 film, Before You Know It.

You can see Tullock in action by streaming the second season of Perry Mason on Max.
