Here for the nostalgia

There were so many epic hair moments on the 2025 Oscars red carpet, from Demi Moore's long, dark 'Oscar waves' to Mikey Madison's intricate updo. However, one of my absolute favorites was Halle Berry's nostalgic hairstyle, which took me straight back to the '90s.

In case you missed it, the 58-year-old Never Let Go star stepped out in a mirrored Christian Siriano gown (featuring 7,000 beads), and she wore her hair in a sleek bob with flipped hair. The familiar 'do instantly reminded me of stars like Drew Barrymore, Gabrielle Union and Naomi Campbell—all of whom have rocked variations of the style during the '90s and early '00s.

In an exclusive interview with PureWow, New York-based stylist Olya Iudina described this classic style as "a bob haircut, but unlike the classic bob with a blunt sharp bottom line, [this one] has a softer finish where the ends flip upwards.”

Bea Carmichael, a hairstylist and global educator for Aveda, also told PureWow, “It has a versatile aesthetic and can suit most hair types. Flipped hair just has an effortlessly chic vibe to it—like you’ve tried, but not too hard, kind of look—which makes it so fashionable. It’s also surprisingly easy to maintain and for hairdressers to adapt it to your hair and lifestyle.”

Berry isn't the only star who recently revisited this look. In 2024, while attending the Academy Museum Gala, Selena Gomez rocked the same sleek flipped-out hairstyle, and for Paris Fashion Week in 2022, Zendaya put her own twist on the trend by rocking longer hair.

Others like Julianne Hough, Jennifer Lopez, America Ferrera, Ariana Grande, Quinta Brunson and Ayo Edebiri have also been spotted rocking the chic hairstyle at recent red-carpet events.

Regarding its recent resurgence, hair colorist Ryan Pearl told us, “The '90s were all about bold, playful styles, and they’re definitely making a comeback. People are loving the throwback to a time when things felt carefree and fun—plus, who doesn’t love a good pop culture revival?”

Ready your round brushes and curlers, because it looks like this style is officially back.
