Charles Spencer just found buried treasure (kidding…sorta).
Today, Princess Diana’s brother shared a must-see photo on his personal Instagram account, featuring a Roman coin that was discovered at Althorp House (the English estate where the siblings grew up).
The photo offers a close-up glimpse of the artifact, which features illegible scripture alongside a man’s portrait. The metallic coloring stands out against the grey background, even though the coin’s edges have been chipped away.
The caption read, “Handsome silver coin—Roman—found just now at @althorphouse.”
Followers immediately filled the comments section with congratulatory remarks. One person wrote, “How exciting [heart-eye emoji]!” Another added, “Brilliant find well done keep up the great job I’m sure there’s more to find keep on digging [applause emojis].”
This isn’t the first time Spencer has found buried treasure at Althorp House. In December 2021, he shared a similar photo on Twitter featuring another piece of Roman currency. He wrote, “Lovely Roman coin found by detectorists in the grounds of @AlthorpHouse today.”
Spencer continued, “It’s from the reign of the Emperor Antoninus, Hadrian’s successor: he also built a wall in the north—the Antonine Wall. Remarkably good condition, for a coin that’s nearly 1,900 years old.”
Spencer has also used social media to share throwback photos of his family. Earlier this year, he posted a never-before-seen picture of his and Princess Diana’s dad, John Spencer (the 8th Earl Spencer). He wrote, “My father was born 98 years ago today—he’s shown here marching alongside the coffin of George VI at the king’s funeral.”
