Carrie Underwood is showing the world a new side of herself, one we haven’t seen since she was a preteen. Yep, she’s going back to her roots, literally. The country star, 42, just debuted her natural hair color for the first time since she was 12 years old. Known for her signature blonde locks, Carrie surprised fans with a fresh new look that blends soft brown and blonde tones—aka bronde perfection.

In a series of selfies and a glam video posted to Instagram, Carrie showed off her freshly colored hair styled in loose curls and a middle part, with layers that fall just below her shoulders. And it’s giving rich, cozy, late-summer energy.

“Well, the last time I saw my natural hair color, I was probably about 12 years old,” she captioned the Monday, August 4 post. “But I thought it might be time to give it a second chance.”

She also gave a shoutout to her stylist: “Thanks @hairbykatelin_ at @parlour3beauty for helping me get back to my roots! #NewOldMe #Bronde.”

Fans were obsessed.

“WE LOVE A BRONDE,” one person commented. Another wrote, “Girl! What a rich and luxurious cut, highlights/lowlights… you wear it well!!!” A third simply said, “You would look beautiful with any color.”

Interestingly, Carrie hinted at going darker way back in 2012 during an interview with Refinery29. “I’ve always been blonde! The problem is, I don’t want to shock people,” she said. “If I dyed my hair brown, I don’t want people to think I’m turning dark and serious.”

Well, it’s official: Carrie has joined the dark (hair) side.
