Alexis Ohanian Reveals to Wife Serena Williams Why He Stepped Down from Reddit Board: ‘To Make a Better World for Olympia’

Alexis Ohanian is opening up about why he stepped down from the Reddit board, and we now have a newfound respect for the 37-year-old co-founder.

Over the weekend, Ohanian announced he’s resigning from his position as a Reddit board member and asked his colleagues to replace him with a person of color. Shortly after the news broke, the entrepreneur sat down for a candid interview with his wife, Serena Williams, and revealed that his decision had everything to do with their daughter, Alexis Olympia.

“This was not an easy decision at all,” he said. “I thought about what I could do beyond a social media post, beyond a donation.”

Ohanian admitted, “This was not an easy decision at all.” However, he hopes his stepping down will lead to change within the organization, adding, “We need diversity at the highest levels of business now more than ever. Once I realized why I needed to do it, it became very easy.”

In addition to his resignation, the Reddit co-founder pledged $1 million to Colin Kaepernick’s nonprofit Know Your Rights Camp. He’ll also donate a portion of Reddit’s future profits to help the Black community.

“I thought about what those dollars could do for a community that has clearly suffered for far too long, and that I—with my power and my influence and my privilege—want to do something meaningful to start to show a change. To make a better world for Olympia,” he said, referring to his 2-year-old daughter.

We fully support this.
