If there’s one thing my fellow PureWow editors and I believe in, it’s investing in a quality mattress. But between all the researching, timing and budgeting that goes into it, I totally get that most of us can’t buy a new bed at the drop of a hat. So, the next best thing? Getting yourself a quality mattress topper.

A cushy layer that you add on top of your current mattress, toppers are just the thing to hold you over if you’re in between beds or hoping to make the most of a more budget-friendly option. Toppers can also fix small issues you’re having with an otherwise good mattress, like adding softer cushioning, firmer support or a cooler feel. To that last point, PureWow staffers have personally tested some of the most popular cooling mattress toppers on the market. The one that came out on top? Tempur-Pedic’s TEMPUR-Adapt + cooling topper (from $329; $249), which Sara Baksh, senior manager of business operations at Gallery Media Group, confirms does way more than just cool off her bed.

Ahead, her honest review of the addition that she says “completely transformed” the low-budget Amazon mattress in her guest room—much to her visitors’ delight.

What Is the Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Adapt + Cooling Topper?

Tempur-Pedic

According to the brand, the TEMPUR-Adapt mattress pad is designed to offer “personalized support that instantly responds to your weight, shape and temperature.” It adds 3 inches of cradling TEMPUR-Material to the top of your bed, and with the added cooling option, you’ll get a cool-to-the touch performance cover that can help regulate your temperature for a more comfortable snooze. The cover is dust-mite and allergen-resistant, as well as removable and machine-washable, making for easy care.

It’s Easy to Set Up

Tempur-Pedic

“After testing the TEMPUR-Adapt + cooling topper on my own bed last year, I ended up moving it to our guest room—the place where my low-budget Amazon mattress lives. The Amazon mattress was just…fine. It was a little too firm and thin and not exactly something I felt great about guests sleeping on, but it did the job,” explains Baksh. “But after feeling bad when a number of guests who were visiting around Christmastime complained about their achy backs and bad sleep quality after spending a night in that room, I made the decision to sacrifice my sleep quality for theirs.

“Moving it over from the other room was pretty easy. It did take two people to carry because I am petite and didn’t want it dragging on the floor, but setting it up on the bed was super easy and only took one person—just unroll and go. And honestly, the difference of the mattress topper was even more impressive there.”

It Immediately Adds Contouring Comfort

Tempur-Pedic

“Once adding the topper, it completely transformed that guest bed into something I can be proud of (and prefer to sleep on myself!). It now has that classic Tempur-Pedic contour that you’ll feel with many of its beds; it’s supportive and really good at cushioning pressure points. Now it actually feels like a bed anyone I bring over chooses to sleep in, not just tolerate for the night.”

It Prevents Overheating

“The cooling still holds up just like the first day. It still keeps my body feeling neutral and comfortable. While I wouldn't call it aggressively cooling, it doesn’t have that heat-trapped feeling that you sometimes get with memory foam,” Baksh continues. Of course, Tempur-Pedic's proprietary material isn't regular old memory foam. Rather, it's a one-of-a-kind, high-density foam derived from NASA technology.

Combined with the cooling cover (a $60 addition), the topper provides a breathable, temperature-regulating feel. “There’s no overheating, even with multiple nights of use. And the washable cover is still in great condition despite it running through the washer multiple times now.”

Bottom Line: Is the TEMPUR-Adapt + Cooling Topper Worth It?

Tempur-Pedic

Baksh’s final thoughts? “The biggest selling point for me with this mattress topper is that you don’t need a brand-new mattress to get a high-end/luxury bed feel. With a good quality topper that can do the heavy lifting, it can transform even the dingiest of mattresses and some may even have a noticeable difference from night one.”

Sound like something you need in your life—or, more specifically your bedroom (or guest bedroom)? For a fraction of the price of an entirely new mattress, we’d say this topper is worth the buy.
