When it comes to towels, most of us fall into one of two camps: You either invest in the good stuff—the plush, hotel-quality kind that makes drying off feel like an act of self-care—or you grab whatever is on sale and call it a day. But the real question is, do the so-called “luxury” towels actually live up to the hype? After you’ve put them through the ringer (literally) of daily use, multiple wash cycles and questionable bathroom ventilation, do they retain that fluffy feel? And are they absorbent, too? Simply put, are they worth the spend, when you have so many other expenses vying for your hard-earned dollar?

To find out, I recruited a handful of PureWow editors—myself included—to put some of the internet’s most popular plush towels to the test. Think: hotel-caliber towels from Parachute,  thick yet quick-drying options from Brooklinen and ultra-soft sets from Cozy Earth. While plenty of options looked good on the rack, only a few earned top marks for the qualities that really count: softness, absorbency, durability and how fast they actually dry between uses. So below, find nine plush towels that were worth the splurge—and which ones left us hanging (pun intended).

How We Tested the Plushest Towels

  • Value: We factored in the price per towel—whether sold individually or as part of a set—and how that price stacked up against the quality. Did it feel like a luxury towel at a luxury price…or a luxury towel at a steal?
  • Plushness: Typically, towels with a GSM (grams per square meter) of 600 to 900 are considered plush—and every towel on this list meets or exceeds that baseline. We also had testers describe how the towel felt in their hands: Was it soft and fluffy upon unboxing? Did it maintain that plushness after multiple washes, or did it flatten out over time?
  • Absorbency: Because softness means nothing if the towel doesn’t do its job, we tested how well each towel absorbed water after a shower. Did it immediately slurp up moisture, or did droplets sit on the surface? Did you need to rub the towel against your skin to get fully dry, or was a gentle pat enough?
  • Dry Time: We tracked how long each towel took to air dry after use—from freshly soaked to fully dry. Towels that returned to near-original weight within one to two hours earned higher marks. The faster the dry time without sacrificing plushness, the better.
  • Durability: We paid close attention to how the towels held up after multiple wash and dry cycles. Did they maintain their softness, shape and absorbency? Were there any signs of pilling, fraying, stiffness, shrinkage or color fading? Towels that got better—softer, fluffier, more absorbent—with each wash scored top points here.

Let me start by saying, I’m not what you’d call a towel enthusiast—researching GSM and loomed cotton is just part of my job. But when I tell you I could not stop petting this one like a faux fur throw blanket, I mean it. The Turkish Aegean cotton is like a slice of heaven straight out of the box. It’s definitely on the thicker side (750 GSM, to be exact), but not so heavy that I feel like I’m draping myself in a weighted blanket. Instead, it strikes that sweet spot between dense and airy, wrapping me up without weighing me down. Plus, I was pleasantly surprised by the absorbency—it soaks up water immediately and, most impressively, it hasn’t lost that slurp-it-right-up quality after repeated wash cycles.

The towel took about two and a half hours to fully dry when hung over my rack after showering, which feels pretty reasonable for how plush it is. My only PSA here—don’t make my mistake and leave your CeraVe acne wash with benzoyl peroxide anywhere near this towel if you’re not using white. I share a bathroom with my roommate, so I opted for the sage color (which is gorgeous, by the way), but the peroxide left a permanent stain. Totally user error—but worth flagging if you’re eyeing any of the non-white tones.

I was a little skeptical about these being called “super-plush”—I appreciate a thick towel, but I’m not so jazzed about the long dry time that tends to come with it. But these towels live up to their plush promise—and dry way faster than expected. I’d say it took about 40 minutes for it to return to its original weight. And considering how thick and fluffy it is, this was a game-changer—it was fully dried after a solid hour. (After comparing notes with my coworkers on their towel tests, it’s clear this one took the cake for plush and quick-drying.) The absorbency has held up beautifully through several wash cycles—no pilling, no weird stiffness sneaking in, and no need to aggressively rub yourself down to get fully dry.

As for the design: I opted for the Striped Stone tone, and it’s even better in person—a soft beige with white lines that feels like it belongs in a coastal boutique hotel. The towels themselves are also generously sized, with that delicious, extra-thick Turkish cotton texture that feels luxe without being heavy. Out of the box, they do shed a bit—tiny fibers everywhere—so I’d recommend giving them a solid wash before first use. But post-wash? They only get better. I tumble dry them on low and they come out as soft and plush as the day they arrived, if not softer.

“This towel’s cotton and viscose blend felt unlike anything I’ve ever tried before—I didn’t want to take my hands off it,” shares Associate Fashion Commerce Editor Stephanie Meraz. “Bouncy and unbelievably soft, the feel was the biggest standout by far—but another factor that took me by surprise was how lightweight it was, too. With such a plush fabric, I didn’t really expect the luxe material to be so weightless.” But softness alone wasn’t what sold her—it was how well the towel served its ultimate purpose—absorbing water. “One of my biggest qualms with fluffy towels is that they don’t really work, in the sense that they always feel soft, but when it comes to drying, they fall short. But that’s not the case with Cozy Earth’s bath towels. The towel absorbed all my water droplets straight out of the shower as soon as it touched my body.” And the best part? “I didn’t even have to rub the towel to pick up the water. Simply draping the towel along my legs, back and stomach was enough to grab every last drop.”

To that end, even after a couple of washes (including a “bloody shaving fiasco” that required handwashing one of the towels), Stephanie reports that “the towel looks and feels just as good as the day I got it. The softness is intact, the white, plush fabric is still shiny and bouncy as ever, and it survived without staining in the slightest.” While she noted it took about 24 hours to fully dry after being completely soaked and hand-wrung, she called that “understandable, given how drenched it was.” And in terms of durability? “Closest feeling to a blanket; bouncy, lightweight material; durable as heck.”

“These are the softest towels I’ve ever owned,” shares Senior Editor of Branded Content Kelsey Paine, who tested the set. “Right out of the packaging, they felt soft and plush—not an ounce of stiffness.” Made in Portugal from 100 percent fine-combed zero-twist cotton, the weave feels thick and cloud-like, with what Kelsey calls “a nice little luxury I get to enjoy every day.” She adds that even after a few washes through her local NYC drop-off laundry service (which, as she puts it, “doesn’t use the best products—definitely no fabric softener”), the towels remained just as plush. “So many towels I’ve owned come back hard and flat after a trip to the laundromat. But so far, these have survived.”

Yet, what really sold her was the absorbency. “These are ultra-absorbent—no water droplets piling up at the surface at all. I honestly loved reaching for them after my shower, knowing I’d essentially be dry as soon as I wrapped one around my body.” And while the plushness makes them feel indulgent, it’s also what contributes to their one downside: dry time. “My fiancé uses the towels early in the morning and hangs them to dry. They’re still damp to the touch three hours later, though our bathroom (admittedly) doesn’t have great ventilation. Luckily, I usually shower at night, so this hasn’t been a huge issue for me personally.” She also noted a small detail that elevated the experience even further: “They arrived with this light, clean, almost floral scent—even after a wash, it seems like they subtly hold onto the smell of my shampoo and body wash.”

“I would need three of my skinny Target towels to match the height of this one,” shares PureWow Assistant Editor Marissa Wu. “It kind of reminds me of a cozy blanket—the weight is pretty hefty. I also liked that they were very long. To me, there’s nothing worse than an itty-bitty towel after a shower. I want a HUGE towel—and that’s what I got.” Made from 100 percent long-staple Turkish cotton and woven at an ultra-dense 800 GSM, it makes sense why Wu gave it high marks for comfort and size. Yet, the absorbency came with a few caveats. “There were never any water beads, and it slurped up the water immediately… but my body always felt a bit damper than when I use one of my ‘regular’ towels,” she explains. “I typically like to be dry to the point of tack after getting out of the shower. These towels left a very fine layer of moisture on my skin.”

As for dry time, she estimates about 2 to 3 hours to fully air dry after use. “It was still damp after about 1.5 hours,” she notes, though she adds that the heft and thickness likely contribute to the longer drying period. Durability, however, is where these towels impressed most. “I didn’t follow the washing instructions—they needed to be cold washed and dried on low—but I always wash and dry towels and underwear on hot. That’s what I did, and they felt the same as when they came out of the box. No pilling, no loose threads.” Her one con? “I feel like I had to apply more pressure to my skin and hair to get the water out. But conversely, the material was never rough on my skin. So I’m kinda neutral about it.”

Woven from 100 percent fine-combed Turkish cotton at a generous 700 GSM, it makes sense why this towel has amassed over 10,000 five-star reviews. “I’ve tried other plush towels that don’t absorb water well at all, but these are incredibly absorbent without ever feeling bogged down—and they stay lusciously soft,” says PureWow Editor Abby Hepworth. Yet, what really sets this one apart is how it holds up over time. “I’ve been using these towels for over a year and they look just as fabulous as the day I got them—even with two cats who occasionally like to scratch at them.” Despite regular wear, she reports “hardly any pulls or bare spots,” and says both softness and absorbency have remained consistent. Just note: They require proper laundering. “You have to follow the wash instructions to a T—don’t overdo the detergent, and avoid high heat in both washer and dryer. But if you treat them right, they last.”

“They're not the most plush towels I've ever felt, but they're close—and you can tell right away these are high quality,” she adds. As for dry time? “If you’re just patting yourself dry after a shower, expect this towel to be fully dry in about 40 to 45 minutes. For the towel I wrap my hair in, it took closer to an hour and a half.” Even the smaller sizes (like the hand towel and washcloth) hold their own, staying fresh-looking and smooth, without that crunchy, over-washed feel. One minor callout: “The bath sheet size is enormous—ultimately too unwieldy for me—but the classic bath towels are perfect.”

“This towel has excellent absorbency,” shares PureWow Executive Editor Alexia Dellner, who tested the towel on herself, her hair and—most impressively—on her “squirmy kids who do not understand how to shake off water before exiting a bath or shower.” Even her husband put the towel through its paces and reported similar results. Yet, while Alexia noted it’s “much more plush than my other towels (from Target’s brand),” she added that it’s “not the most plush I’ve ever had (at, say, a luxury spa or hotel).” Still, the absorbency stood out above all: “No water droplets rolling off—I’d say this towel dried completely around the 30- to 45-minute mark,” she reports—faster than expected for a towel with such softness.

She also flagged the towel’s durability as a highlight, sharing that there’s been “no shrinkage or fraying yet after a month of regular use and multiple washes.” Another standout feature? The brand’s signature pined edges and monogramming option. “There’s the option to monogram your towel, which is very cool…I also feel like this towel was slightly larger than my other ones, which I love.” Her only gripe? The limited color selection: “Maybe it’s because I have kids, but I get nervous owning white things and wish this towel came in more color options. So far, there hasn’t been any staining or fading, but I like having the option of darker colors for towels and linens.”

“This towel was like a sensory toy right out of the box—the looped pile felt so chunky and satisfying in my hands, but not so dense that it felt heavy or bulky,” shares PureWow Senior Editor Dana Dickey. Made from 100 percent certified Egyptian cotton with a weighty 750 GSM, it features longer terry loops that contribute to its super-absorbent performance. “Because of the deep pile of the terry loops, there was room for the first swish of water to get soaked up immediately, and then the body of the weave absorbed the rest. It was mega-absorbent even after a couple of whole-body swipes.” To that end, she was impressed by how well the towel held up under heavy use: “I used this guy every day during my move, and it didn’t flag in absorbency or softness.”

She also called out the mid-towel hanging loop as a standout feature, though she noted that when hung by the loop alone, the towel didn’t dry as quickly as it did when stretched fully over a towel rack. “It took about two hours to completely dry when I hung it properly—not bad at all given how absorbent it is.” Durability-wise, the towel passed the test of multiple washes. “The twill border really helps keep the loops from fraying, and even though I’m pretty tough on towels (I always seem to snag them), this one didn’t snag once over a month of heavy use.” Dana also praised the luxe, wide twill border as a design detail that elevated the overall look: “It feels so gift-worthy—I’d absolutely put a set of these on a registry.”

“These towels had a crisp and clean hotel-quality to them right out of the packaging,” shares PureWow Associate Editor Destinee Scott, who tested the towel in white. Made from 100 percent combed Turkish cotton and finished with dobby striping, it weighs in at 620 GSM, so it’s thick enough to feel high-end but not so dense that it’s slow to absorb. “I didn’t notice any water droplets sitting on the surface,” Destinee says. “It was absorbent and got the job done, even after using it for a week straight before washing.” She also adds, “It felt expensive, but not super plush compared to other towels I’ve tried—mainly Restoration Hardware.” That said, she notes the size and dimensions were “on point,” adding that it looked polished and luxurious before its first wash.

It’s worth noting, however, that performance took a slight hit post-laundry. “I wasn’t impressed by how it held up in the washer,” she admits. “It didn’t come out as crisp as before—it looked rough after one cycle—but it still felt the same.” As for drying? “It took over an hour to fully get back to its original weight, which isn’t terrible, but definitely longer than my Cozy Earth towels. Still, it was OK to lounge around in without feeling totally weighed down.” Ultimately, Destinee gave it high marks for value and durability despite a few drawbacks. “It’s a good price for the plushness and definitely hotel-quality—it just might not be my go-to for everyday use.”

Frequently Asked Questions

What type of towels are the softest?

If softness is your top priority, your best bet is a towel made from long-staple cotton—specifically Turkish, Egyptian or Pima cotton—woven using either zero-twist or low-twist yarns. The term “long-staple” refers to the length of the cotton fibers themselves: The longer the fiber, the fewer ends stick out of the weave, creating that silky-smooth, cloudlike feel (and fewer chances for pilling). Zero-twist towels are spun without twisting the fibers, which leaves the threads open and extra fluffy, enhancing softness and absorbency at the same time.

Material aside, softness is also influenced by weight, measured as GSM (grams per square meter). Towels in the 600 to 900 GSM range tend to feel the plushest—lightweight towels below 400 GSM are faster-drying but rarely have the same soft, thick handfeel. Look for a balance between dense, looped pile and breathability for that true “wrapped-in-a-spa” sensation.

Which is softer: Turkish or Egyptian cotton towels?

According to the team at Parachute, Egyptian cotton is known for its ultra-fine, silky fibers, which makes it incredibly soft—especially right out of the box. Turkish cotton, on the other hand, has slightly longer fibers with a more open, airy weave that starts out soft but actually gets softer and fluffier over time with repeated washing. In other words, Egyptian cotton tends to offer immediate softness, while Turkish cotton offers lasting softness.

For everyday use, many people (myself included) lean toward Turkish because it strikes a better balance between plushness and practicality. Egyptian cotton can feel heavier and take longer to dry, which is why it’s often reserved for luxe spa environments or formal guest baths where drying time isn’t an issue. But Turkish cotton gives you that soft, cozy feel and dries faster—which means it’s the more functional option for daily showers.

How do you get towels soft and fluffy?

Here’s the secret: Less is more when it comes to laundry care. Fabric softeners and dryer sheets might seem like the obvious move, but they actually coat the fibers with a waxy layer that builds up over time, making your towels feel stiff and reducing absorbency. Instead, stick to a gentle detergent (ideally free of heavy fragrances and additives) and skip the softener altogether.

To keep that fluffy texture, tumble dry your towels on low heat with wool dryer balls, which help lift and separate the fibers while cutting down on dry time. If your towels are starting to feel crunchy, a cup of white vinegar in the rinse cycle can help break down detergent residue and restore softness. And one more pro tip? Avoid overcrowding your washer—giving towels room to move around lets them rinse and fluff properly.

How can you tell if a bath towel is high quality?

A high-quality towel comes down to three main factors: fiber length, weave construction, and finishing details. You want long-staple cotton (like Turkish, Egyptian, or Pima), tightly looped terry construction (no sparse, uneven loops), and a GSM of at least 600 if you’re after that plush, soft feel. Zero-twist or low-twist yarns are also a good indicator, as they enhance softness without compromising strength.

Beyond the material, look for thoughtful design details like double-stitched or hemmed edges (to prevent fraying), colorfast dyes, and certifications like OEKO-TEX® (which ensures the fabric is free from harmful chemicals). And trust your hands: A good towel should feel dense but not stiff, soft but not limp, with a smooth, even pile that bounces back when you run your fingers across it. If it feels too thin or scratchy in the store? It’s not getting any better at home.
