taco bell grilled steak burrito review: cheesy melt and chipotle ranch grilled steak burritos
Taco Bell

Taco Bell has no shortage of burritos in the permanent lineup, ranging from the fully loaded Beefy 5-Layer to the vegetarian Cheesy Bean and Rice. But before you order your usual, you should know that the chain just released two new grilled steak burritos (yes, right on the heels of launching crispy chicken strips, tacos and burritos). They’re the newest additions to the fast food giant’s Cravings Value Menu, which exclusively features items for $3 or less.

To find out if the value was too good to be true, I, a food editor, headed to the nearest location to taste both iterations. Below, you’ll find my honest reviews and original photos of each burrito, along with a top pick.

2. Taco Bell’s Cheesy Melt Grilled Steak Burrito, Reviewed

  • What’s In It: marinated grilled steak, three-cheese blend, jalapeño ranch sauce, reduced-fat sour cream and seasoned rice, grilled in a flour tortilla
  • Price: $3

This one is definitely more what you expect from a Taco Bell burrito. It’s heavy on the rice and seems like less steak-forward than the other option. But for $3, this is probably the more filling of the pair. It has a mild heat, but the spice itself is more one-note than its Chipotle Ranch counterpart. Its texture was also much softer because it wasn’t grilled and had more “slop” fillings, like sour cream. I’d go with this one if you’re a diehard for one of the evergreen burritos, or if you’re looking to get as satiated as possible for $3.

1. Taco Bell’s Chipotle Ranch Grilled Steak Burrito, Reviewed

  • What’s In It: marinated grilled steak, chipotle ranch sauce, avocado ranch sauce, shredded lettuce, pico de gallo, cheddar cheese and crispy Fiesta tortilla strips, grilled in a flour tortilla
  • Price: $3

I found this new grilled steak burrito to be much more interesting, both in terms of texture and flavor. The lettuce and chips were both still crisp, offering pops of crunch between morsels of tender meat and a double-dose of sauce. Without rice in the mix, this felt like a lighter choice, although the grilled tortilla somehow made it feel heartier all the while. The pico offered much-welcome freshness to the menu item, resulting in a flavor and appearance that was somewhat of a departure from the typical fast food burrito. I also liked the spice here, as it tasted zestier, more herbaceous and nuanced compared to the Cheesy Melt option.
