Starbucks Launched Mini Pies That Can (And Should) Double As Drink Toppers

You deserve a lil' treat

Crisp fall days call for meandering walks: to take in the changing leaves, to get some fresh air...to snag a little treat. The only problem is that you have only two hands, and it's nice to keep one free as you stroll. (The other, of course, is reserved for your iced coffee.)

Well, Starbucks may not have intended to, but the coffee chain has solved this problem with the ideal seasonal dessert: mini pies. Each one fits perfectly—I mean to the millimeter—within the raised edge of a grande cup lid, so you can stick it on your cup and stroll, free to wave to passersby, rifle through your bag (why is that lip gloss always at the very bottom?) or gesture wildly as you yap with the friend.

The pies come in three flavors: pecan, pumpkin and apple crumble, and while the pumpkin is arguably the most photogenic (just check out that leaf garnish), the pecan gets my vote for its nutty-meets-caramel notes and just-right ratio of buttery, flaky crust to gooey pie filling. As someone who finds a full-size slice to be a little too syrupy, the diminutive version was ideal.

You really can't go wrong with any of the trio. The pumpkin has strong cinnamon and nutmeg notes that give way to a creamy, almost custardy filling. It's the least sweet of the bunch.

The apple crumble is the messiest of the bunch, thanks to its streusel topping, but I can see it becoming a crowd-pleaser. It has the same buttery pie crust base, with about a 50/50 ratio of apple filling to oatmeal-esque topping. It's kind of like a soft, apple-oatmeal pie cookie. I didn't notice actual chunks of apple—it's more of a puree—but at this size, I didn't mind it. Plus, the streusel offered plenty of texture on its own.

The mini pies cost $2.95* apiece, though I did save $1.90 by ordering all three at once. They hit menus on Tuesday, Sept. 29, alongside a brand-new drink, the Aerocano. I also tried it, along with the caramel version, and I have to be honest: I was underwhelmed. Deemed a "modern take on the Americano," it's Blonde espresso air-whipped and poured over ice. This creates a light foam and eliminates the bitter aftertaste you can often get with an Americano, but it also seemed to lack flavor all around. In fact, it tasted almost watered-down. To that end, it's worth noting that I tend to favor robust coffee flavors and I've never been a fan of an iced Americano, so if you like milder drinks, you may love this launch.

My vote? Stick with a classic cold brew and order the mini pie—or all three. Your Cool Autumn Walks will never be the same.
