Priyanka’s Mumbai Nights was partially dreamed up while Chopra Jonas was on tour with the Jonas Brothers, and further solidified in a late-night chat with her husband, Nick Jonas.
“Individually, we get together, we sit down, we’ve had dinner, and then we do a post-mortem of our day. Most ideas happen during those late-night chats. And this was one of them,” she explained at a press event about the popcorn.
The mix was inspired by Chopra Jonas’s favorite Indian flavors, which include garlic, turmeric, onion, cumin, bell pepper and carrot. “Mumbai is my home. I've spent about at least 15, 20 years of my life there, and it’s a very specific, alive, cosmopolitan, glamorous city,” she adds. “Mumbai has super humid nights. It gets really hot but it’s [also] really seductive.”
The city’s sultry, vibrant energy is what the spice mix aims to replicate. “You get a great finish with the red pepper and the black pepper that’s in there. But also, the turmeric is a wonderful addition,” shared Nick Jonas.
We tried it ourselves and would describe it as sweet, savory, warm and complex. It’s well seasoned without being in-your-face spicy, and it’s one of those snacks that you just want to keep noshing on, ideally alongside a beer or soda. (Not for nothing, the popcorn also comes in a gorgeous, gold-adorned bag, its spearmint color inspired by Nick and Priyanka’s daughter’s nursery.)
In case you haven’t heard of the brand before, Rob’s Backstage Popcorn was started by the Jonas Brothers’ former bassist’s dad, Rob Garbowsky. In 2011, Nick prepared his signature sweet-and-salty popcorn (it’s like a mix of movie theater popcorn and kettle corn) with him, and it quickly became a backstage staple on tour. Eventually, the brothers teamed up with Garbowsky to share his snack with the world and launched the brand.
Priyanka’s Mumbai Nights is now available at Walmart, Safeway and Albertsons stores nationwide. “I’ve seen usually Indian flavors or flavors from my part of the world in an ethnic aisle, so this is really exciting to be able to get such a mainstream release,” said Chopra Jonas.
