This Under-the-Radar Chain Just Launched a Mac & Cheese Menu—& It's Not to Be Missed

Four new kinds of mac?! Say less

noodles and company mac and cheese menu reviewed and taste tested

The way Forrest Gump's Bubba felt about shrimp is the way I feel about macaroni and cheese: "It's the fruit of the [kitchen]. You can [add] barbecue [to] it, boil it, broil it, bake it, sauté [veggies to toss in] it. There's, uh, [mac and cheese] kebabs, [mac and cheese] creole, [mac and cheese] gumbo..."

I'll take it any way you serve it, and after reviewing food and developing recipes for the past decade, I have strong opinions on it. So when I heard that the mecca to all things pasta—Noodles and Company—had revamped its mac and cheese recipe and added three new riffs on mac to the menu, I beelined it to the Garden City, NY, location to try them all. Here's a breakdown of all four dishes, along with my review and photos, so you can start planning your next meal ASAP.

Oh, and if you're not into mac, the brand added six other new dishes to the menu, including Basil Pesto Cavatappi, Green Goddess Cobb Salad and Chicken Caesar Salad.

Note: Prices and availability may vary, depending on your location.

1. Creamy Cheddar Mac & Cheese

  • What It Is: elbow noodles in cheddar & jack cheese sauce, topped with shredded cheese
  • Price (Full-Size): $7.50

It's true: Wisconsin Mac & Cheese is no longer on the menu. But that's a good thing. This take on classic mac was designed to be creamier and saucier, and it truly delivers. Elbow noodles are drenched in a cheddar and jack cheese sauce, which is seriously silky and thick, with just the right amount of salt to keep it lively. The whole thing's topped with shredded cheese, which I highly recommend mixing in before digging in. It's the secret to a gooey, epic cheese pull, and if you don't, the noodles along the edge of the bowl could be a little bland.

Mac and cheese can often skew one-note, tasting same-y after a few bites, but the blend of cheeses in this dish will keep you coming back for more.

2. Pulled Pork BBQ Mac & Cheese

  • What It Is: elbow noodles tossed in cheddar & jack cheese sauce with pulled pork, BBQ sauce, green onions and crispy onions
  • Price (Full-Size): $12.75

Simply put, this is a summertime cookout in a bowl. Featuring the same cheddar-jack sauce and elbow noodles as the creamy mac, this version amps things up with the addition of barbecue pulled pork and crispy and green onions. The onions add tanginess and crunch to the meal, while the pork provides a succulent sweetness. It seems made for dining alfresco—a takeout order you can (and should) take to the park.

3. Garlic Bacon Crunch Mac & Cheese

  • What It Is: elbow noodles tossed in garlic cheddar sauce with bacon and white cheddar, topped with crispy onions, parmesan cheese and fresh herbs
  • Price (Full-Size): $12.75

Consider this the wildcard entry to the mac and cheese menu—it's the only mac on the roster that doesn't feature a cheddar-jack base. The Garlic Bacon Crunch Mac & Cheese features a garlic cheddar sauce instead, which really infuses each bite with herbaceous flavor. Pair that with bacon, Parm and white cheddar, and you've got a delightfully cheesy, slightly smoky, dish. It does get a bit salty, so you'll want a large glass of water on the side, but it is absolutely loaded with flavor. I'd recommend splitting it with a friend and ordering a salad to round things out.

4. Buffalo Chicken Ranch Mac & Cheese

  • What It Is: elbow noodles in cheddar & jack cheese sauce with parmesan-crusted chicken, topped with Buffalo sauce, green onions, crispy onions and ranch dressing
  • Price (Full-Size): $12.75

Out of all four dishes, this was my favorite. Granted, you have to like a little spice—I'd say it's a low-medium, since the Buffalo sauce is tempered by all the cheese and ranch—but wow, is it a nice mix of creamy, cheesy, savory and salty, with a little kick at the end. Go easy on the green onions, or they'll compete a bit too much with the Parm-crusted chicken and Buffalo/ranch blend, but otherwise, this dish is comfort food perfection. The noodles were al dente, the crispy onions offered a subtle crunch, the chicken was hearty and juicy—it's sure to be a hit for any Buffalo ranch fan, and I can see it being a go-to order ahead of football game days this fall.
