Moe's Just Seriously Upgraded Its Burritos, So I *Had* to Review Them for You

Carnitas fans will want to sit down for this

Ah, Moe's Southwest Grill: You don't have to be a regular to enjoy a Cheers-like, "welcome to Moe's!" greeting every time you enter. But if you are a regular, there's a good chance you have a go-to order and you rarely deviate from it.

Maybe the allure of a drink, 2-ounce side of queso and chips is enough to get you to downsize to a junior burrito, as part of the chain's $10 value meal (only available at select locations). Maybe you're feeling spunky and ask for a 50/50 of pinto and black beans. But switch up your proteins? Never!

Well, maybe you should. Especially if you're a carnitas fan who enjoys a little spice.

The chain recently added Chile Verde Carnitas to the menu: shredded pork simmered in tomatillos, green chiles, garlic and onion. The catch? It's only available for a limited time, and for an additional charge (an extra $2.40 in my area, though the exact cost may vary, depending on your location).

So, is it worth rushing to the chain to try it, given the upsell and the opportunity cost? (Will you spend every bite wishing you stuck with your usual steak or adobo chicken?!)

The Flavor: Mildly Spicy, Very Savory

I won't bury the lede: If you are a carnitas fan, you need to give it a try. It's essentially like carnitas slow-simmered in their housemade tomatillo salsa; it adds a little kick, but the spice is still fairly mild-to-medium.

Interestingly, I had two people tell me it brought out an almost citrusy flavor. I didn't quite notice that, but I did catch the tart, light acidity of the tomatillos, which may be where that citrusy, zesty note was coming from.

The Texture: Super Juicy

My one qualm about carnitas is that they can dry out and get stuck in your teeth. The chile verde marinade keeps this protein outrageously juicy; so much so that you can go a bit lighter on salsas and other condiments and still wind up with a burrito or bowl that's loaded with flavor.

The Value: Iffy

Given the extra spend, I'd be inclined to only order this occasionally. I'm a big fan of the salsa and dip bar, so I tend to load my burrito bowl to the point that it'd drown out the chile verde flavor. At that point, I might as well stick to regular carnitas. But, if you're trying to lighten your overall order, this is a great way to add flavor without piling on gobs of condiments.

Should You Try It?
