We know, we know. There are lots of rules when it comes to making coffee. Use fresh beans, grind them at the last minute, yada, yada, yada.
But hear us out: This super-simple trick will make the coffee you brew at home so much more flavorful. It’s called blooming, and it takes about 90 seconds.
Here’s what you do: Right before brewing, whether you’re using a Chemex, French press or plain old automatic drip machine, pour enough boiling water over the grounds to wet them. Wait for about 45 seconds. You’ll see the grounds swell and expand. That’s called the bloom.
Why does it work? Hot water releases a bunch of CO2 that’s trapped inside. The gas carries most of the coffee bean’s flavor. So more gas = more flavor. Isn’t science cool?
