Cracker Barrel

Don’t get me wrong—I’ll gladly give Cracker Barrel all my money, especially at this time of year. From the oh-so comforting hashbrown casserole shepherd’s pie to the rustic slow-braised pot roast, there’s plenty to savor on the chain resto’s fall menu. But ever since I found out about the tasty Bloctober special, my appetite is set on breakfast.

For the entire month of October, guests who come in wearing their favorite football team’s jersey or bring in valid same-day ticket stubs for a football game can score a free side of pancakes with the purchase of any entrée. The special is running nationwide at more than 600 Cracker Barrel locations.

Why Bloctober? I’m so glad you asked. It’s a nod to the pancake block, a football move where a defender is flattened like…well, a pancake.

In case you’re a newbie to the magic that is Cracker Barrel, let me fill you in. The chain serves breakfast all day long, so you won’t need to go in the morning to cash in. They have standard lumberjack-style plates that come with eggs, potatoes and breakfast meats, as well as the famous biscuits and cornbread that hit the table as soon as you arrive.

For pancakes specifically, this deal likely applies to classic flapjacks. However, I’d be remiss not to mention the many varieties they offer. I’m talking OTT strawberry-stuffed cheesecake pancakes, topped with confectioners’ sugar and strawberry syrup, as well as “lighter” options like blueberry pancakes, chocolate chip pancakes, pecan pancakes and fresh strawberry pancakes. Their French toast is also incredibly decadent, with the new butter pecan iteration being the newest.

While you’re there, I recommend getting evening fare and breakfast, especially if it’s your first time. The chain just released a slew of new items for the holidays, like the breakfast burger (a half-pound of beef, American cheese, hashbrown casserole, bacon and a sunny-side egg on a toasted bun), sausage and egg hashbrown casserole and cinnamon swirl French toast. The beloved country fried turkey (pictured), topped with pan gravy and served with two classic sides and cranberry relish, is also back for the season.

If you think those (and free pancakes, of course) sound divine, just wait until you shop the kitschy country store after your meal.
