The Caesar salad never seems to go out of style. What started as the signature salad at an Italian immigrant’s Tijuana restaurant has become an undeniable cornerstone of American cuisine since hitting the dining scene in the 1920s. Today, it’s as endemic to the U.S. as the Cobb or Waldorf, both in salad and wrap form. It’s the no-brainer side for a juicy steak, hearty pasta or slice of pizza. It’s the roughage in #girldinner, a crisp balancing agent for a basket of fries and potent dirty martini. It’s arguably the salad for people who don’t like salad—after all, how can you go wrong with chopped greens, bread, cheese and a boatload of creamy dressing?
With an ever-growing sea of chains at our disposal, the Caesar salad now comes in many forms. A slight departure from its original form, it can come crowned with alternative proteins, fancy breadcrumbs or Parmesan crisps instead of croutons, and all sorts of veggies that we wouldn’t have expected from our go-to cafeteria lunch. To find out which of them offers the tastiest, I, a food writer, tried offerings from six popular brands. Below, you’ll find my honest reviews, original photos and detailed ranking.
