When it comes to chic attire, Zara Tindall doesn’t flinch. The daughter of Princess Anne knows what she’s doing and is constantly serving outfit inspo, whether it’s her sneakers, sunnies or even just a classic shirtdress. But it was her fall-friendly (and caramel-hued) belted coat from Hobbs ($760; $570) that caught my eye this weekend at the Cheltenham racecourse—specifically, her ‘half bow’ belt loop styling trick.

I’m the first to admit: Knowing what to do with the belt of a jacket is hard. Mainly, that’s due to the fact that there are myriad options—for example, the flat wrap trick. You can also knot it behind your back for a style that cinches you in at the waist but prevents your coat’s belt from looking bedraggled or sliding out of place. Both excellent options.

But that’s where Zara’s ultra-polished, but also effortless-seeming ‘half bow’ trick comes in.
I first learned about this stylist-approved method from Bojana Sentaler, founder of another royally-approved coat brand, Sentaler. As she explained at the time, to achieve it, simply adjust the belt so that one side is longer than the other. Next, loop the longer end over and under into a single tie knot, but don’t pull it all the way through. The end result should look like Zara’s with both ends even at the bottom. (Note: It may take a couple of practice tries to get it right, but once you do, you’ll be a total pro.) “It looks neat and put together, but also nonchalant, like you spent zero time,” Bojana said.
It doesn’t hurt that Zara’s coat is particularly eye-catching and tailored to fit her frame—exactly the kind of elegant style you want in your closet for fall. Still, the devil’s always in the details, which is why nailing the belt loop trick will be the secret to looking pulled together every time, no matter what coat you have on.
