The start of a new year means a whole new wave of fashion trends to explore and play with. And as always, the easiest ones to incorporate into your existing wardrobe are color trends. You can wear the styles and silhouettes you already know and love, just in gorgeous new hues, offering a fresh twist on your classic look. This year there are two colors in particular that are cropping up literally everywhere I turn—burgundy and brown—but they’re not the only shades you should be wearing. Below you’ll find six of the top winter color trends to know going into 2026 (plus one I advise skipping for now) to help you stand out from the pack.

How to Wear Metallics Long Past New Year’s Eve and Still Look Fabulously Chic

1. Peridot Green

There are multiple shades of green climbing the charts right now, but the most popular and most unexpected is peridot. This acidic jewel tone is guaranteed to stand out even in small pops, like a sleek pointy-toe flat or satin clutch. And while it may seem intimidating to wear, the key to pulling off this vibrant hue is all in the colors you choose to pair it with. Yellows, blues and other shades of green tone down that “in your face” acidity and tend to blend more seamlessly for a tonal effect. On the flip side, pinks and reds serve as an opposing force, whether you opt for more muted shades or equally bright variations.

2. Winter Citrus

Multiple fashion houses had already begun to embrace orange as a color trend this year (Fendi, Ulla Johnson, Etro, JW Anderson) before Taylor Swift chose it as the defining color of her showgirl era. Whatever your inspiration, these oranges lean more toward bright citrus hues (clementine, tangerine, etc.) than autumnal variations (aka pumpkin). I love this trend as a way to add some cheer to dreary winter days, even if all you wear is a citrusy T-shirt under your go-to beige cardigan.

3. Deep Plum

Burgundy is still holding strong as a major color trend for the season, but I am starting to see a bit of a shift toward more purple undertones. Deep plum is just as easy to wear as its red-toned cousin, burgundy, but feels a a hint more playful or unexpected. While you can always build a whole new outfit around this royal hue, you don’t need to totally reinvent the wheel to pull it off. Simply try swapping out your usual burgundy favorites for a plum, amethyst or eggplant version instead.

4. Navy Blue

Calling all minimalists, there’s a new hot neutral on the rise you’re going to want to pay attention to. Coming off a year filled with aquatic and maritime style inspiration (fisherman-core, sardine summer, etc.), it’s really no surprise this deep blue shade is suddenly a must-have. Start by swapping it in wherever you’d typically reach for black, or try wearing a slightly lighter, sun-washed variation with black pieces for an unexpected and very interesting combination. And don’t be afraid to lean into preppy influences either—I have a feeling classic navy peacoats and polo-collar shirts will suddenly become not just classics but cool in the very near future.

5. Pastel Pink

Delicate and dainty shades of pink have been steadily on the rise for some time now, but I think they’ll really come to a head as a top color trend in the new year. It’s just such an easy and flattering hue to wear, and looks incredible paired with literally every other color on this list. If you’re worried about such a pale shade washing you out, there are multiple style tricks you can try, none of which involve getting a spray tan. First, layer your pastel pieces next to something richer, like plum or emerald, to strike a balance so the outfit isn’t entirely pale or entirely dark. Or you can always opt for a more saturated pink, like bubblegum or everyone’s favorite millennial shade. These are still well within the pale pink trend, just less likely to totally wash you out.

6. All Shades of Brown

Camel, chocolate, beige, coffee—all of these and more are still reigning supreme as *the* neutral tones of the year. And suede in particular is definitely the coolest way to rock any and all shades of brown. For something that feels particularly fresh, I recommend testing out Pantone’s French Roast hue. It’s dark enough to work as a replacement for black, but has a rich, earthy vibe that really draws you in, especially if you wear it with other earthy colors like forest green, ochre or terracotta.

SKIP: Butter Yellow

The most unexpected color trend of the past five years, butter yellow’s reign is finally coming to an end. We had our fun with the food-inspired hue, but I’m just not seeing it sticking around as we head into 2026. That doesn’t mean you necessarily need to toss all those butter yellow styles you invested in this year, however. You can definitely still wear them so long as you stick with smaller pops and focus on pairing them with a trendier shade, like deep plum or bright cherry red.
