When you think of Ugg, you probably think of fuzzy boots and cozy clogs—shoes you immediately want to pull on when the first gust of cold air hits. I do, too. At least, I did. But then I discovered that the brand known for its foot-warming comfort also makes sandals. Turns out, there’s an Ugg for every season—summer included.

The brand’s latest sandal drop includes the strappy, sporty Goldenstar Villas ($140) and the chunky Goldenstar Hi slides ($120). But as soon as I spotted the Ugg GoldenGaze slides ($120), I knew they were the pair for me. The sleek silhouette, flat sole and double-strap design immediately caught my eye. Ugg crafts the GoldenGaze sandals from suede and pairs them with the same grippy sugarcane EVA outsole we’ve all come to know. Given that I’ve just relocated to Los Angeles from New York City, I saw them as the perfect companion for  outdoorsy adventures and beachside wanderings I have planned in my new city.

But sans all the plush, fleecy lining, would they be as comfortable as the brand’s more wintry styles? After two weeks of near-daily wear, here’s my honest review of the Ugg GoldenGaze slide sandals.

First Impressions

Ugg

I’ve never been disappointed in the quality of an Ugg style, and these are no exception. When I took them out of the box, I examined the sandals’ construction up close. From the velvety suede outer to the sugarcane sole, down to the little stitched details, everything felt sturdy and well-made. Nothing about them suggested they’d fall apart after a season of wear. The two straps are thick and flat, with a smooth leather underside. The hook-and-loop closure also seemed easy to adjust.

For their first outing, I wore them on a roughly 2-mile walk to and from the supermarket. Admittedly, not the most glamorous outing, but an essential one nonetheless (especially as someone who doesn’t drive, in L.A.). I trekked up and down hills, navigated uneven sidewalks and baked in a blazing sun I wasn’t accustomed to. I was certainly sweaty and frazzled. But my feet? They felt as cool and comfortable as cucumbers. A credit to the microfiber footbed and buttery-soft leather lining of the straps, both of which prevented any rough chafing, I returned home from my journey completely blister-free.

They Get More Comfortable with Every Wear

The GoldenGaze slides have firm cushioning and a rigid sole that required some adjustment at first. Now that I’ve broken them in, though, I appreciate the solid support they provide. Plus, the more I wear them, the more the footbed conforms to my foot’s shape; I can already see the subtle imprints forming where my heel and toes sink in, which explains why these seem to get comfier each time I slip them on, whether I’m grabbing coffee, exploring my new neighborhood or making yet another grocery run.

If I had one quibble: While the straps did not rub the tops of my feet raw upon first wear, I did feel like I needed to flex my toes to keep them in place, which caused some soreness on the top of my foot. After a few wears, I realized the roomy fit was the culprit. That’s great news for shoppers with wide feet, but my feet run narrow. To fix the issue, I tightened the back straps as much as possible—though I wish I could tighten them a tad more for extra security. Even so, I’m not sliding out of them or struggling to walk comfortably.

They’re Easy to Style

Ugg

Between their slip-on ease and supportive feel, the Ugg sandals have already earned a permanent spot by my front door. But comfort isn’t the only reason I keep reaching for them.

I find that the style’s suede finish and beachy, boho aesthetic also make them particularly versatile for my new West Coast wardrobe, especially in the Mustard Seed hue. (They also come in Black, Red Pepper and Dark Chestnut shades.) I’ve paired them with jorts and a crochet top, a floral maxi dress and even leopard-print jeans. Sure, they wouldn’t be my first choice for a night of dinner and dancing—they’re a little too flat and daytime-y for that—but I could see myself going from an afternoon wandering around Venice to happy hour drinks in them, easily.

Bottom Line: Are the Ugg GoldenGaze Sandals Worth It?

What I Like

  • soft leather straps
  • supportive footbed
  • cute, boho look

What I Don't Like

  • fit can be too roomy for narrow feet
  • suede not water-resistant

Ugg

Take it from someone who has racked up tens of thousands of steps: These slides were made for walking. As you might imagine, the lack of fluffy wool inside means that the GoldenGaze sandals aren’t as pillowy plush as the brand’s slippers or booties, but they’re definitely just as comfortable—and worthy of repeat wear.

If you have wide feet or bunions, you’ll really benefit from the roomier fit and adjustability of the straps (even if they don’t get quite as tight for my liking), while anyone could enjoy the super smooth footbed and supple suede exterior. Quality, versatility and price-per-wear considered, I’d say that at $120, these Ugg sandals are practically a steal. As for me? I plan to don them on repeat until it’s officially (Ugg) boot season again.
