6 Summer Trends You Can (& Should) Keep Wearing Through Fall

While there are some items in our closet that fit squarely into one season and not any others (looking at you, beloved puffy parka and barely-there bikini), we love to get as much use out of the rest of our wardrobe as we possibly can. That means finding ways to transition one season’s trends to the next—without looking like we’re running a few months behind. These six pieces we wore on repeat all summer are rather easy to carry on into fall, with just a few minor styling tweaks. Here’s how to make them work…even as we speed on toward Thanksgiving.

These Will Be the 7 Biggest Jewelry Trends of 2019

Strappy Sandals

Before you confine your feet to boots for the next five months, give your favorite strappy sandals one last go. They’re a particularly great way to nail transitional looks on those days when the autumn chill hasn’t quite settled in but the desire to wear your new oversize blazer is just too strong to resist.

Shop the trend: Dolce Vita ($120); Joie ($298); Loeffler Randall ($350)

Wear it with: Chelsea28 blazer ($78); 1.State blazer ($169); Gap jeans ($39); Mother jeans ($198)

Prairie Dresses

Yes, puffy sleeves and billowing skirts will still be going strong in September, October and November. Lucky for us, long sleeves and maxi hems provide warmth and coverage as the mercury starts to drop. Balance the volume of a loose prairie dress with some sleek pointy toe pumps or slim-fit booties to keep everything in proportion. And try to stay away from delicate or bright florals—a solid color is your best bet here.

Shop the trend: Free People ($148); Stine Goya ($268); Dôen ($298)

Wear it with: Louise et Cie heels ($100); J.Crew flats ($158); Sam Edelman boots ($160)

Shorts Suits

While the weather is still warm enough to sport bare legs, you might as well continue wearing perhaps the biggest trend to come out of summer 2019: the shorts suit. We’re particular fans of layering a thin knit under your blazer and finishing the look with a back-to-school-inspired pair of loafers or even some sporty sneakers.

Shop the trend: ASOS blazer ($72) and shorts ($35); Endless Rose blazer ($105) and shorts ($65); Ganni blazer ($360) and shorts ($190)

Wear it with: Everlane sweater ($100); NakedCashmere sweater ($225); Converse sneakers ($50); Dr. Scholl's loafers ($90)

Shell Jewelry

Mix and match beachy shells (real, resin, metal or whatever you prefer) with gold and silver pieces or layers of delicate beads to help transition the summer staple into cooler months. Bonus points if you opt for one piece that incorporates both shells and a fall jewelry trend, like chunky chains or baroque pearls.

Shop the trend: Madewell bracelet ($32); Kate Spade New York earrings ($47); Rellery earrings ($79); Tohum Design bracelet ($255)

Wear it with: Anthropologie necklace ($48); Gorjana bracelet ($55); AUrate bracelet ($180); Alexa Leigh necklace ($235)

Contrary to its very summery reputation, tie-dye has the power to transcend seasons. As long as you adjust the type you’re wearing, of course. Opt for darker colors rather than rainbow swirls, and try to stick to items that feel more classically fall, i.e., a long-sleeve tee, a chunky sweater or a midi skirt.

Shop the trend: Back Beat Rags T-shirt ($48); Haitus top ($48); Free People top ($78); Raquel Allegra T-shirt ($170)

Wear it with: Forever 21 jacket ($25); Banana Republic jacket ($249);  Good American jeans ($115); Rag & Bone jeans ($295)

Leopard Skirts

This summer it felt like every single time we scrolled through Instagram there was someone else wearing a spotted midi. Turns out the trend is only becoming more and more popular. Wear yours with a cozy black sweater and white kicks or have some pattern-mixing fun by layering it under a gray plaid blazer.

Shop the trend: Rachel Zoe ($17); A New Day ($23); Majorelle ($148); Silk Laundry ($205)

Wear it with: Halogen sweater ($98); ATM Anthony Thomas Melillo sweater ($295); Fila sneakers ($65); New Balance sneakers ($105)
