From Princess Diana to Princess Kate, something that’s always struck me about the coats the royals choose to wear is that they make a statement. They’re bold, they’re colorful, and they’re almost always an outfit-maker all on their own. A lot of that is due to the tailoring—the buttons are always well-placed, the length hemmed to perfection. But the selection of coat brands the royals reach for also plays a part. Here, the most beloved labels (plus, how to shop them yourself).

1. Sentaler
Both Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle have reached for this Canadian-based brand on repeat over the years. From designer Bojana Sentaler, each coat is made from luxe and ethically sourced Alpaca wool, which is as warm as it feels polished. I can attest from personal experience testing the brand that beyond the luxe material, it’s the tiny details—the ribbed sleeves, the soft-but-sturdy structure, the range of colors available—that make it such a royally approved standout.

2. Massimo Dutti
The Spanish label is a favorite for the Princess of Wales, who has worn the brand’s coats—in addition to other pieces—numerous times over the years. Her camel coat in particular is one that she’s worn on repeat, but it was an oversize beige-check style (worn to visit students at the University of Derby in 2020) that really cemented the brand’s staying power in Princess Catherine’s closet.

3. Cuyana
Meghan Markle in particular is a mega-fan of this sustainable (and California-based) brand. She’s of course carried its handbags on repeat—the Paloma is a timeless fave—but it was her elevated silk trench coat, worn to the 2023 Invictus Games in Dusseldorf, that made the most waves (and has been carried by Cuyana ever since).

4. Holland Cooper
Mid-pandemic, Princess Catherine stepped out in a floor-length coat from this British brand, which is known for its iconic—and elevated—pieces, and it felt like a mic drop moment. Her purply-green tartan (worn to a premiere of Cruella at the Palace of Holyroodhouse) was so pretty, but also tailored. The brand as a whole has become synonymous with styles that provide chic and countryside-ready options. (Kate has reached for it plenty of times since.)

5. Barbour
Royally speaking, this coat brand might be the most timeless—everyone from Queen Elizabeth to Princess Catherine have regularly worn Barbour. Its classic waxed jackets are as practical as they are polished. But most importantly, they’re equipped to handle the elements (and easily dovetail with recent barn coat trends).
