PureWow Editors Opened Their Closets, Here’s the One Pair of Jeans They’ll Never Get Rid Of

From Mother to Madewell

If your closet is anything like ours, it contains at least one pair of jeans you’ve been meaning to donate, another that only fits after a very specific workout and one pair you swear you’ll wear once the weather cools down. Then there’s the pair. The jeans you reach for without thinking. The ones that somehow work with everything. So we posed an impossible question to our team: If you could only keep one pair of jeans, which would it be?

We found the answers say as much about personal style as they do about denim itself. Some editors swear by rigid, vintage-inspired pairs that only get better with age. Others refuse to give up the cropped hem. But it's no surprise all of them feature cotton as the main material: The natural fiber is durable, easy to care for and built to last, which is exactly what you want from jeans you plan on wearing into the ground—especially as we head into the fall. Plus, unlike synthetic fibers, cotton doesn’t shed microplastics. Fashion loves declaring a new jean every five minutes, but the best pair is often the one that has nothing to do with the moment. Ahead, meet the jeans our editors wear on repeat.

“Mother is my absolute favorite denim brand, and I swear, the fit of The Reifler is almost breathtaking. The mid-rise waist hits just right, and the straight leg has the slightest kick at the bottom, which makes me look a touch taller. They’re made from rigid 100 percent cotton denim, so I get that vintage feel that actually holds its shape. But be warned: They run small, so size up!” — Deena Campbell, Fashion and Beauty Director

“Barrel jeans can be a tricky silhouette to pull off, but these make me feel so confident. The high waist hits at such a flattering spot and is perfect for a tuck. I’m also obsessed with the feel of these jeans. The crisp organic cotton gives them shape and structure, without being stiff in the slightest, and it only gets better with wear.” — Stephanie Maida, Senior Commerce Editor

3. Sézane Le Crop

Sézane

“I've been wearing Sézane's Le Crop jeans for a few years. My first pair was in ecru—surprisingly versatile all year round—and I loved them so much I bought them in a traditional denim wash, too. I'm a big fan of the 7/8 pant length, I feel you can dress them with flats or sneakers or even heels, and the cropped hem means it's not too visually heavy, no matter what shoes you're wearing. In particular, the denim wash is also just a tad stretchier, making them super comfortable when I want a relaxed outfit that still feels thoughtful.” — Marissa Wu, SEO Editor

“If I could only keep one pair of jeans, it'd be these. At 5'1", I love how the high waist hugs my waist while the wide leg makes my legs look longer. They're made from 100% cotton, so they're incredibly soft and only get better with every wear. I wear them with kitten heels all summer and ankle boots all fall. They're the perfect mix of trendy and timeless, and while I own them in a few washes, the dark indigo is the pair I always reach for first.” — Victoria Parrotta, Senior Design Director

“These button-fly jeans are the ones I reach for time and time again, since they're engineered to be flattering to the female form with their high waist and slender-but-not-tight leg. Unlike other denim in my closet, these are soft from the first wear; I got them because they look like something a French girl would wear with a low heel and cardi. The 27-inch inseam is perfection on me as a petite, hitting right at the ankle.” — Dana Dickey, former Senior Editor

Citizens of Humanity

“In a sea of denim (to which I hoard own a lot), I continually gravitate toward this wide-leg, cotton and cashmere blended style by Citizens of Humanity. Between the high-rise waist, deep indigo wash and vintage silhouette, these jeans are indisputably cool—and lucky for me, they go with just about anything, from a structured blazer for a day at the office to a chunky sweater for leaf-peeping in the fall.” — Catrina Yohay, Executive Managing Editor
