Grab Your Cable Knits and Cardigans—We're Having a Meg Ryan Fall

As New York bookstore owner (and email enthusiast) Kathleen Kelly in 1998's You've Got Mail, Ryan cycles through a collection of classic cardigans that appear to strike the ideal balance between cozy and lightweight. This cashmere number from Anthropologie is a dead ringer for one she wears on repeat, complete with a rounded crew neck and dainty string of buttons.

Many of us still swoon over Billy Crystal's white cable knit in When Harry Met Sally (men, take notes), but Ryan rocked a chunky sweater of her own throughout the film, only in a rich cherry red and with the most flattering of shrunken silhouettes. After quite a bit of searching, I've determined that this knit from Sézane is the closest lookalike currently on the market. It's made from organic cotton and features similar slouchy sleeves paired with a shorter, more fitted cut.

In one scene, Ryan's Sally dons the aforementioned red sweater with the ultimate late '80s/early '90s pair of high-waist, straight-leg jeans in an autumn-appropriate dark wash. Agolde nails it with this retro style, featuring a rigid, 100 percent cotton construction that's just relaxed enough through the legs.

And to top off the red sweater/dark jeans combo? None other than a rather academic chocolate brown blazer. I love the delicious hue and added texture of this corduroy pick, as well as its tailored, waist-defining shape. The ribbed cuffs are a nice touch—one that you'll surely appreciate if you're walking through the park with your unlikely love interest on a crisp, windy day.

Back at the bookstore, our heroine sits wistfully amongst her stacks of hardcovers in a plush gray turtleneck that would make anyone long for a bouquet of newly sharpened pencils. You can get the look courtesy of Quince's ribbed cashmere fisherman sweater, snuggle-worthy roll neck and all.

Ryan's characters can certainly teach us a thing or two about layering. Case in point? The You've Got Mail fit consisting of a black turtleneck and sleeveless shift mini dress. It's cozy without being bulky, not to mention incredibly chic. This faux suede frock is just what you need to recreate the look—it even has a similar neckline and seaming.

The sleek black mock neck that Kathleen wears to a publishing party has lived rent-free in my mind since I first saw it (as has her point that "caviar is a garnish"). Leave it to Meghan Markle-beloved brand Bleusalt to stock a lookalike in a luxuriously soft modal blend. I have no doubt that it's comfortable, but it can easily be dressed up for an industry soirée of your own.

No '90s rom-com wardrobe would be complete without the perfect pair of drapey, pleated pants that say, "I'm a fierce and opinionated lady, and I'm ready to take you on." I think these Abercrombie trousers with included buckle accents get the message across pretty clearly. To potential suitors: Banter at your own risk.

In yet another memorable fall moment from You've Got Mail, Ryan carries a pumpkin through the streets of the city, all bundled up save for the hint of a wooly skirt peeking out from beneath her coat. The texture, pattern and length remind me of this wool-blend pencil skirt from Amazon that reviewers confirm is thick enough to keep you warm well into the winter.

What else would you expect an independent bookstore owner to step out in other than a pair of polished, lace-up leather oxfords? After all, it's been the footwear favored by posh poets and preppy academics through the ages.
