From the very first week of 2022, Barbie pink basically dominated our Instagram and TikTok feeds, flooding the streets during fashion month and infiltrating our wardrobes in every shape and form. And while the super bright hue is still popping up fairly often, the start of 2023 has ushered in a new top dog, and we could not be more excited. The trendy color in question? Green.

Yup, green in basically all its forms—forest, emerald, neon, pistachio, jade, lime, grass, etc.—have been slowly but surely unseating Barbie pink as the most popular color to wear. The trend first started way back in 2021 with “Bottega Green,” a specific Kelly-adjacent shade popularized by Bottega Veneta’s creative director at the time, Daniel Lee. The rest of the year saw an increase in green accessories, shoes and clothes across both high-end and high-street brands. In fact, the color was primed to be one of the top trends of 2022 until the surprising upheaval by the one-two punch that was the announcement of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie movie and Valentino’s entirely pink fall/winter ‘22/’23 collection. But it appears we’ve returned to the flattering world of greens for 2023 and, honestly, we’re very excited about it.

Spring/summer ’23 runway shows for Fendi, Michael Kors, Givenchy and, of course, Bottega Veneta all included stand-out green looks, as did lots of other designer collections. And we’ve already started to see that high-end influence and the return of Bottega Green with more affordable brands like Anthropologie, J.Crew and Mango. Street style stars have been adding splashes of green to their outfits, and even embracing head-to-toe monochrome looks and ‘fits that mix and match multiple shades at once.

The good news is that this is one trend that’s basically impossible to mess up. Kelly green may be the most prevalent shade on the market, but darker pine hues and pale mints are every bit as trendy, meaning you can opt for essentially whatever shade you like best and feel confident you’ll fit right in. And if you’re looking for some outfit inspiration, we’ve got you covered. Here are seven trendy green looks we plan on copying ASAP in 2023.

1. Wear Colorful Denim the 2023 Way

Rather than turn your poor stems into Kermit-colored Crayons in a pair of skin-tight skinny jeans, opt for a wide-leg or boyfriend silhouette instead. Luxe-looking basics, like a brown leather belt, minimalist sandals and a simple gold chain necklace can also elevate your new green denim and ensure you don’t end up looking like an early aughts costume.

2. Mix Different Hues, Textures and Patterns

We love a clean, monochromatic ensemble, but you don’t need to stress over trying to find an exact match if you embrace the fun of mixing textures and patterns. Throw a chunky two-tone knit over some forest green acid-wash jeans and add in some green-and-gold statement earrings for a pop of fun. Because they all comes from the same color family, you’ll end up looking more fashion forward and less like you accidentally got dressed in the dark.

3. When In Doubt, Rock One Fabulous Accessory

If you’re more of a neutrals gal or just don’t love rocking head-to-toe green, a single splash of color will still have you looking right on trend. A small handbag, oversize sunglasses or even some Kelly green sneakers are more than enough to fit in with 2023’s biggest color statement.

4. Superbright Hues Look Best in Classic Silhouettes

Lime, Kelly and Bottega greens are all fabulous stand-out shades, but if you’re nervous about looking like a blob of Nickelodeon slime we do have some advice: Stick with classic silhouettes, like shirt or wrap dresses, simple slip skirts or crewneck cashmere sweaters. The simplicity of those basic shapes perfectly balances out the vibrancy of brighter, “look at me!” hues.

5. Green Works Beautifully with Both Stark White and Deep Black

Barbie pink can sometimes look a bit too Hot Topic when paired with black, and on the flip side can feel very ‘60s Palm Springs next to bright white pieces. Green, on the other hand, plays nicely with both ends of the color spectrum, and can help shake up your go-to neutral ‘fits.

6. Have Fun with a Monochrome Look

Head-over-heels for green? Why not rock it from head to toe? Swap last year’s full Barbie ensembles for coordinating separates in vibrant green shades to create looks that are every bit as attention-grabbing.

7. Tone Down Lime with Richer Hues

If you want to try wearing greens on the brighter end of the spectrum, we advise mixing them with richer, darker hues to strike a nice balance. While we have seen the occasional successful mixing of multiple day-glo shades, all too often those combinations end up looking like ‘80s workout costumes, rather than chic get-ups. Dark purples, deep navys and chocolate browns are much easier to pull off, in our opinion.
