Fringe is back. Again. But before you roll your eyes and start having flashbacks to 2016 Coachella, hear me out. This time around, the trend has undergone a surprisingly chic rebrand. Gone are the suede vests, distressed denim shorts and flower crowns. Here are the fringe waist scarves, swishy skirts and fringed knit tops. Celebrities have been making the case for fringe’s return, too. We’ve seen Zendaya embrace dramatic movement (we’re still obsessed with her Good Morning America dress), and Rihanna loves the look too. Meanwhile, fashion’s current obsession with texture—from raffia and crochet to tassels and artisanal embellishments (looking at you Chloé and Balmain)—has created the perfect environment for fringe to sneak back into our closets. Ahead, the smartest ways to wear fringe this summer—and exactly how to avoid looking like it’s 2016.

If you’re fringe-curious, swimwear is one of the easiest places to start. A one-piece with a fringe-trimmed neckline or a bikini top with subtle movement is the perfect way to start. Pair your suit with classic sunglasses, an oversized button-down and minimal sandals. Let the fringe do the talking.

Styling Tip: Choose fringe that’s integrated into the design rather than dangling from every edge. The goal is not to look like your swimsuit is shedding.

This season’s best fringe bags lean more structured and less Bohemian. You’ll notice lots of structured shoulder bags, woven clutches and sleek crossbodies accented with just enough fringe to catch the eye when you walk. While previous iterations leaned heavily into festival dressing, today’s versions offer oversized fringe pieces that serve as a major statement detail.

Styling Tip: Look for longer, cleaner fringe to stand out.

Fringe earrings, tasseled necklaces and movement-focused accessories offer an easy entry point for trend skeptics. The beauty of these pieces is that they add texture without overwhelming. A pair of statement earrings can transform a simple tank-and-trouser combination, while a tasseled evening clutch adds interest to an otherwise minimalist look.

Styling Tip: Choose one fringe accessory per outfit. Multiple moving pieces can start competing for attention.

If fringe belongs anywhere, it’s on the dance floor. A fringe-trimmed cocktail dress or evening gown brings incredible movement and drama with every step. Unlike the heavily beaded flapper-inspired styles of years past, today’s versions are slightly more architectural. Look for silhouettes with fringe concentrated at the hem, sleeves or neckline rather than covering the entire garment.

Styling Tip: Fringe already creates movement, so there’s no need to pile on statement jewelry.

Fringe sandals, mules and heels offer a surprisingly wearable way to embrace the trend. The key is choosing footwear where fringe serves as a detail rather than the entire design. A sleek sandal with fringe accents feels current, while overly embellished Western-inspired will feel a bit like it’s 2016. We like to merge the looks, and opt for a Western-inspired flat with fringes throughout.

Styling Tip: Pair fringe shoes with streamlined silhouettes like tailored shorts, slip dresses or wide-leg trousers.

Don’t: Fringe-Hem Jeans

A decade ago, denim with fringe at the ankles felt fashion-forward. Today, it can instantly date an outfit. Instead, look for fringe on pieces like a chic handbag, a breezy skirt or a swishy dress. The goal is to use fringe as an accent, not a throwback trend.
