Florence Pugh’s Oscars Look Pays Homage to Kristen Stewart’s ‘22 Oscars Ensemble

Florence Pugh has swiftly become one of our absolute favorite red carpet style stars, always choosing fabulous and interesting looks. There’s no doubt she’s got her own unique style, but for the 2023 Oscars ceremony we can’t help but wonder if she pulled a bit of inspiration from one of last year’s boldest Academy Award attendees. Because, really, who else has ever worn shorts to the Oscars?

In 2022 Kristen Stewart walked the red carpet in a Chanel tuxedo that would have been daring enough paired with a white shirt unbuttoned all the way to the waistband, except that it was also completed with a pair of shorts rather than trousers. (And later she changed out of her heels into a pair of white socks and loafers, really solidifying the look as one of the most iconic in Oscars history.) We thought for sure Stewart would be the only person to ever wear shorts to the awards ceremony but this year Florence Pugh proved us wrong.

At first look, Pugh’s Valentino Couture ensemble seemed fairly par for the course in terms of Oscars gowns—billowing and dramatic with a long train. But turns out that was just the top-half of Miss Flo’s look. The bottom half was another pair of black shorts, much like Stewart’s. And honestly, we absolutely love it.

In a red carpet interview with Laverne Cox for E!, the Don’t Worry Darling star described her look as “bit of romantic, bit of punk.” She finished off her look with some sky-high black platform heels, a stunning orchid-inspired Tiffany & Co. necklace and pink tourmaline and diamond earrings.

We doubt that shorts will become a true mainstay of red carpet fashion, but these two have proven it can be done and done with aplomb.
