I appreciate classic footwear, from the boat shoe trend to the best white sneakers. I find that these tried-and-true kicks have stuck around because they’re a) comfortable, b) durable and c) look cute in a number of hook-ups. But there’s one classic-but-forgotten style that’s only recently burbled up to take pole position as 2025’s top summer shoe trend, and I’ve been wearing it 24-7 already: The Fisherman Sandal.

We’re talking about a sandal that’s not too bare, since it encloses the front of the foot in woven leather. (In closed-toe fisherman sandals, no one can hear your overdue pedicure scream.) And I love that they come in both flat and lug sole styles, so you can choose just how close to the pavement is comfy for you. (There are even some hotsy chunky-heel versions out there.) And be still my accessory-loving heart, you can pair these sandals with socks! Overall, I like that these sandals make me feel like I’m an Italian fishing village lady or Roman shop girl riding her Vespa to work—even though in reality I’m just hoofing it to the office or hitting my suburban farmer’s market.

I’ve been wearing the Everlane Day Fisherman Sandal ($168) for a month now—and it seems I’m not alone, with style-setters like Kristabel and Katie Holmes rocking similar pairs recently.

Here, three great ways to wear them and the best pairs to shop now.

Apparently We’ll All Want to Dress Like Fisherman in 2025 & I’m Fully on Board (Pun Intended)

1. With Socks For Next-Level Comfort

A chunky knit layered over a T-shirt and skirt or shorts, plus some cozy socks worn with your fisherman sandals? It’s the transitional cool-to-hot weather look that I love for the 30-degree temperature swings. It’s also a great way to break in a new pair if you’re worried about blisters.

2. Thick Soles and Bare Legs? Beautiful

When it’s way too hot to wear sneakers with my sundress, but I still want enough support to walk around all day without foot pain, I choose a chunky-sole strappy fisherman’s sandal and celebrate just how good an objectively clunky and arguably “ugly” shoe can be. Because fashion girlies know—some days require a bit more support and coverage than any ballet slipper is up to.

3. As a Jelly

Paging all ‘90s girlies: the jelly sandal is back baby, but with grown-up respectability. Labels like Prada and Bottega Veneta make elevated versions, but you can also nab them in the under-$100 price point. Pair them with loose-leg trousers or long shorts for the coolest look.
