But with so many cool new pieces to wade through (especially with the rapid-fire trends coming from TikTok), it can be easy to feel overwhelmed by all the options. So, to help narrow our focus, we asked nine incredibly stylish women over the age of 50 what they’re most excited to buy and wear this autumn, and we have admit, their answers did not disappoint.

7 Fall Fashion Trends That Are Perfect for Women Under 5'3"

1. Carla Rockmore, 55

Trend: Sequins for Day

A big fan of mixing high with low and glamorous touches with classic basics, Carla, @carla.rockmore, is very excited about the prospect of mixing sequins into her daily looks. “I am completely obsessed with the Fall/Winter 2022 sequin trend popping up everywhere right now,” she tells us, and she definitely plans to make the most of the trend. “I will wear this sequin Sportmax blazer over my low-slung, wide leg jeans that are ‘the moment’ for day, as well as with my winter white Angora dress for night. I love it when a trend piece is also practical and forever. This blazer coordinates with every other trend going down the runway, so it’s definitely worth the splurge!”

2. Melissa Meyers, 57

Trend: Superbright Hues

Melissa, @melissameyers, tends to take a capsule collection approach to shopping, picking up timeless styles that are easy to mix and match and supplementing with trends when they fit her fancy. And this year, that’s meant stocking up on lots of super colorful pieces in multiple silhouettes. She tells us, “I recently did a Zara haul and found so many great items that I can’t wait to wear—bright colored pieces in everything from pants, tops, blazers, bags and shoes!” She’s also traded in her skinny jeans for wide-leg cuts, and is loving their leg-lengthening effect.

3. Arlinda McIntosh, 64

Trend: Maxi Skirts

“Like music, clothing can create a vibe,” says Arlinda, @funkingafter50, “and spur an unspoken conversation between you and the onlooker. So I purchase items that make me want to dance and have a relationship with the piece.” For fall ’22 that means embracing maxi lengths, like this patterned, pleated skirt that was basically made for twirling. She plans to style them with hats and oversize tops for a more eclectic, fun vibe, rather than simple basics like a plain T-shirt or tank top.

4. Dana Carroll, 54

Trend: Sequins for Day and Anything Knit

Much like Carla, Dana, @daintydanamarie, is ready to bring some glitz to her daywear this fall. She gushes, “I am so excited that sparkles are in for day!” As for how to style the trend, she says “adding a denim jacket makes it feel so refreshing.” She likes to mix just a few trendy pieces in with her tried-and-true wardrobe staples—which in autumn means just about any and all cozy knits or leather pieces—and has found that age has only improved her sartorial skills. “I’m coming up on 55 fast, and I’m loving this stage of my life where I’m more in tune with my sense of style. The elegance of aging is better than I ever thought it would be.”

5. Joanna Czech, 58

Trend: Unexpected Footwear

Joanna, @joannaczechofficial, is an expert at layering her favorite fall clothing items, with a particular penchant for pairing summer staples with winter must-haves. She reveals, “Sweaters, blazers, coats—I love the variety of fall layering and that you can mix summer and winter. Like lightweight T-shirts with blazers, skirts and boots.” But the item she is perhaps most drawn to is shoes. “I love that very casual shoes are being worn with more dressy outfits. I am adventurous with my shoes and love the comfort of the casual trend. I often wear open-back shoes and sandals in the fall, I am weird this way. So it’s fun to see it popping up as a trend as well.”

6. Roz Kaur, 55

Trend: Sharp Suits

Though she won’t say no to a cozy, oversize sweater, this year Roz, @roz_creativestylist, is more excited about crisp tailoring. “Versace, Fendi and Lanvin all had sharp suits all over their runway shows,” she explains. “And there are so many style options to choose from—structured looks for work or more playful options, like prints or bright colors, for weddings or dinners.” Plus, investing in one great suit also gives you the freedom to pair those pieces with just about everything else in your wardrobe, giving you even more bang for your buck. “I love wearing just my blazer with jeans, tees, turtlenecks or my dad’s old chambray button-downs. At the same time, I can make my trousers look equally cool worn with some form of athletic shoe to create that Phoebe Philo-inspired effortless-yet-extremely chic look!”

Shop similar styles: Ann Taylor Two-Button Blazer ($189) and Wide-Leg Pants ($119); Banana Republic Lido Blazer ($230) and Straight-Leg Pants ($150); Mango Pinstripe Blazer ($170) and Suit Pants ($120); Theory Carissa Blazer ($435) and Demitria Pants ($295); J.Crew Willa Blazer ($278) and Flare Pants ($198)

7. Julie Harbour, 57

Trend: Baggy Denim

Like a true fashionista, Julie, @stylishparadox, isn’t sure she can pin down just one favorite trend, but loose-fitting jeans are definitely near the top. “I’m totally feeling baggy jeans,” she reveals. “They provide comfortability and style all in one. But I also love a classic sweater dress, faux-leather pieces, shackets and trench coats.” Since moving to a colder climate, a unique trench coat is also at the top of her shopping wishlist, so long as she can find the right one. “I’ve really adopted a policy of only purchasing items that I love. In previous years I would buy and buy without the “love”, and not only was it a waste of money, but many times the clothing was just not worn.”

8. Magda Llohis, 79

Trend: Bright Colors

Magda, @magdalife57, isn’t usually one to follow the trends, but this year her personal style just so happens to converge with a major autumn trend: bright colors. “I follow my own trends,” she notes. “For me, there are a few things that are very important and the first one is colors. You will always see me with a colorful outfit.” And while her favorite fall fashion staples are definitely hats—of all styles and colors—she also adds pops of color with scarves, coats and tights. “You will always see me with colorful tights!”

Shop similar styles: Calzedonia 50 Denier Tights ($12); Sheertex Semi-Sheer Tights ($89; $44); Swedish Stockings Svea Tights ($35); Los Angeles Apparel Tights ($16); Tabio 80 Denier Tights ($20)

9. Jodie Filogomo, 56

Trend: Non-Skinny Jeans and Classic Blazers

“My approach to style in general has changed 180 degrees since I retired,” says Jodie, @jtouchofstyle. “I am much more open to trying new things and having fun with my style. I decided that those fashion rules I grew up with were hogwash—who cares if I look taller and slimmer? I want to embrace my body as it is and pick clothes that make me smile and are interesting!” As such, she’s broadening her selection of pant silhouettes and repurposing old favorites in new ways. “As a retired professional, I always think a blazer can be worn to add an air of sophistication to any outfit. I'm looking forward to styling it with shorts and boots while it's still warm, and then jeans when it cools down. I'm also really excited about the new silhouettes of jeans and pants. Not that I won't be wearing my skinny jeans too, but I love that we have so many options now.”
