I’ve admitted this before: As a mom who (mostly) works from home, I take great pleasure in dressing for the school drop-off and pickup scene. Without an office to go into, the attire in my closet starts to feel less purposeful; a commute to and from my son’s elementary school gives me a chance to put in some effort.

That said, what I wear also has to be practical—not only because it’s winter, but because I walk a mile both ways.

The good news: It’s sweater season, as well as the perfect time of year to test the waters with a trend or two like a statement coat or polka dots.

Here, 3 outfits I wore to drop-off this month—with details on the day’s itinerary, too.

1. Work from Home

Today, I was racing to do drop-off, but temps were in the teens. I reached for a puffer jacket (pictured below) atop what has become one of the most versatile sweaters in my closet—the cocoon cardigan—from Jenni Kayne. It’s beautifully oversized (in fact, I recommend sizing down if you decide to buy one yourself), but it is the ultimate wardrobe workhorse, pairing just as easily with a dress as it does with jeans. (FYI, I’m wearing this petite-friendly silhouette from Frame.) I’m also rocking my new favorite platform loafers from Margaux. (There was no break-in period and they offer comfort, style and support for the mile-long walk.) The final details? The Nura Pearl necklace from Monica Vinader and the Paloma bag from Cuyana in a plum-colored hue.

2. En Route to the Office

I idolize fashion girlies in their ability to winterize spring/summer frocks. That’s exactly what I did with a beloved ME+EM long-sleeve polka dot style (similar here), which I paired with black boots from Duo—and OK, Spanx!—plus my oversize wool coat from Rudsak. I felt polished and put together, as well as functional enough to shuttle my kid to school. (My favorite detail is the Paloma bag from Cuyana in a plum-colored hue.)

3. Coffee Meeting with a Former Colleague

Chocolate brown has been my color of choice as of late—so when a cozy coffee landed on the books for post drop-off, I couldn’t resist this polo-style Everlane sweater dress. I opted to pair it with a near-matching chocolate brown boot (similar here) for a monochromatic look, plus a beloved pair of earrings from Polène. Not pictured: The sheer pair of brown pantyhose for an added bit of warmth.
