Ask any tall person about the hardest clothes to shop for, and jeans will get all the attention, followed by long sleeve shirts. But, come summertime, shorts can be just as tricky—they’re much rarer to find in tall sizing, and depending on the cut and inseam, they can flash a lot more skin than you may have intended. (As anyone who endured the fingertip-length dress code rules in school can attest, this can be enough to make you avoid a pair altogether.)

So, what pairs are truly comfortable—and flattering—on taller frames? Over the years as a nearly 6-foot-tall person, I’ve learned it’s key to look for 4-inch inseams or longer (ideally 5+, though I do make some exceptions) and seek out mid- or high-rise options to avoid constant wedgie-picking. Yes, I said wedgie, because I want to be brutally honest with you on what works and what doesn’t. That’s why I’m flashing my so-pale-people-question-my-native-Floridian-status legs for you in this try-on of the pairs I swear by. (And if you have recommendations, leave ‘em in the comments!) Here's to a cool, comfy summer, fellow skyscrapers.

Best Overall Shorts

1. Levi’s ‘80s Mom Shorts

levi's

True story: In college, I stole a pair of my mom’s Levi’s from her high school days, and I wore them until they frayed to bits. These ‘80s Mom shorts are a faithful recreation of the style that ruled that era, featuring their ultra high rise and relaxed-through-the-hips fit. I love the lightweight, breathable feel of the cotton-polyester blend, and how the high waist allows you to run around in them without them riding up (so they truly stand up to mom life!). I wasn’t constantly tugging on the legs, like I’ve done with other pairs.

Best Bermuda-Length Shorts

2. Abercrombie & Fitch Curve Love Mid-Rise Jort

abercrombie and fitch

Fellow PureWow editor Courtney Mason recommended Abercrombie & Fitch’s Curve Love line for plus-size shoppers, and I see why: The fit is ideal for women with wider hips. (No waistband gaps and roomy through the thighs too!) With a 9.25-inch inseam, this wide-leg style is a playful alternate to classic Bermuda shorts (which, ICYMI, are making a comeback). The cut also lends well to pairing with wedges or espadrilles, not to mention being an ideal buy if you don’t want to flash too much thigh.

  • Material: 78% cotton, 22% lyocell
  • Sizes: 23 to 37
  • Inseam Length: 9.25”

Light and breezy, linen is a must-have for summer—and, blame it on the White Lotus effect, but this year, it’s having a major moment. Quince’s pair rivals ones I’d tried for twice the price, and I liked that while they’re a bit loose and flowy, they don’t bunch up and look like adult bloomers (another issue I’ve run into with linen shorts). The blue pinstripe is just the right coastal touch for helping me live out my Nancy Meyers summer dreams, pairing nicely with a crisp button-down or crewneck tee and minimalist jewelry. Don’t be surprised if I show up to every cookout in this pair.

Fast Facts

  • Material: 100% linen
  • Sizes: xs to xl
  • Inseam Length: 5”

OK, OK, while I typically seek longer inseams, I’ll make one exception for these fluttery shorts, which have built-in briefs. This keeps them from getting too cheeky, while still having a flirty vibe. The wide waistband is super supportive without digging in, and they feature a side pocket. Some use it for pickleball or tennis balls, but if I’m being honest, it’s a cell phone holster for me.

Fast Facts

  • Material: 88% Polyester, 12% Spandex; liner is 72% Nylon & 28% Spandex
  • Sizes: XXS to XXL
  • Inseam Length: 2.5”

Best Dark Wash Shorts

5. Levi’s A-Line Women’s Shorts

Everyone needs a sleek, dark wash pair of shorts in their arsenal (summertime = prime time for stains and spills), and these don’t disappoint. They’ve held up beautifully wear after wear, obscuring on-the-go ketchup and cold brew spills—and remained comfortable throughout a 12-hour day running around the Magic Kingdom. They’re right up there with my Mom Shorts in terms of live-in-‘em coziness, only this style is more of a mid-rise and offers a bit more stretch.

Fast Facts

  • Material: 84% cotton, 15% polyester, 1% Lycra
  • Sizes: 23 through 34
  • Inseam Length: 4.5”

Best Dressy Style

6. Tuckernuck Natural Linen Ava Short

tuckernuck

Beloved for their preppy dresses, Tuckernuck’s shorts are worth a closer look. At $128, they’re the absolute splurge of the bunch, but if you’re headed on a special vacation—or want to add a little polish to your wardrobe (especially if you live in the South, where shorts are a necessity most of the year)—they can be worth the investment.

The linen is breezy without being sheer, and the scalloped design is a statement-making touch that can elevate even the most casual look. (And if you’re not into tan, the style is also available in olive green, black and red.)
