What do I like to do to escape a heat wave? Well, have a nice, long sleep of course, but not when I'm waking up all sweaty. From a touch of menopause night sweats to my typical full-summer open-window hot breezes, I will only pt on my tried-and-true favorite nightwear. To broaden my choices, I asked PureWow editors and opinionated Redditors for their favorite styles and fibers, searched the market for the best of each type.

Overall, "look for natural fibers" says Redditor Ransier831. "I would recommend silk. Or I sleep naked on cotton with a silk comforter." Naivegarlic says "I'm a 100 percent rayon fan. The type of rayon that when you touch it it feels cool." And many of my friends and I swear by 100 percent cotton. Here's a deep dive into the best cooling pajamas, including nightgowns, shorts sets, sleep pants and more.

What to Look for in Cooling Pajamas

Key Cooling Attributes to Look for in Pajamas:

  • Moisture-Wicking: Fabrics that draw sweat away from the skin, allowing it to evaporate quickly. This prevents a clammy feeling.
  • Breathability: Materials with loose weaves or micro-gaps that allow for excellent airflow, preventing heat from getting trapped against the body.
  • Lightweight: Lighter fabrics generally feel cooler and are less insulating.
  • Fabric Composition: While natural fabrics have traditionally been preferred over synthetic because they are both airy yet absorbent, textile technology has innovated some cooling man-made blends. The most popular fabrics include:
    - Bamboo Viscose: Highly breathable, soft and excellent at moisture-wicking.
    - Silk: Naturally thermoregulating, breathable and luxurious.
    - Modal/Lyocell: Eucalyptus-based, it is extremely soft, smooth, breathable and effective at wicking moisture.
    - Linen: Known for its loose weave, incredible breathability and quick-drying properties.
    - Performance Blends: Some brands use proprietary synthetic blends specifically engineered for advanced moisture management and cooling.

Best Cotton Nightie

1. Nordstrom Cotton Shirting Nightgown

Nordstrm

This all-cotton nightgown has so much to love, starting with the fact that it runs a bit large, so there's no pinching or tightness even if I toss and turn a bit. The wide straps keep my top in place but keep my neck, shoulders and upper chest uncovered so I don't wake up mid-sleep feeling too hot. Bonus: The lightweight chambray fabric is opaque enough that I can wear this as a sundress with sandals—it even has hidden on-seam side pockets.

  • Material: all cotton
  • Sizes: XS to L

Best Shorts Set

2. Piglet in Bed Linen Blend Pajama Short Set

Piglet in Bed

SEO editor Marissa Wu swears by this brand's "nice linen pajamas," and I love the gingham print, which bests every other brand's offerings by coming in not just one but four gorgeous colorways: berry, warm blue, botanical green and mushroom. The Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certified fabric is free of irritating chemicals; too, the high percentage of cotton in the blend keeps it soft, while the linen is extra cooling. Also welcome on hot nights—a drawstring waistband that's preferable to elastic, since you can loosen it as you like.

Fast Facts

  • Material: 55 percent European linen, 45 percent long-staple cotton
  • Sizes: extra small to extra extra large

Best Linen Pajamas

3. Quince European Linen Pajama Set

Quince

I'm a fan of this set not only because it's a cool linen set that is so lightweight I don't feel too hot in it, but also because it doubles as day wear—just add a fisherman's sandal, a colorful necklace or bandana and grab your raffia bag, and you've got your summer uniform. Additionally, the elastic on the waistband isn't too narrow, nor is it too tight, and the cropped length and gentle barrel leg shape doesn't feel too voluminous. Plus, since it's linen, no one will know you slept in your outfit since it's meant to be wrinkled.

Fast Facts

  • Material: linen
  • Sizes: xs to xl

Best Bamboo Pajamas

4. Cozy Earth Bamboo Stretch-Knit Pajama Set

Cozy Earth

"I love these Cozy Earth pjs!" says affiliate director Pamela Masin. "The price initially feels steep for a matching set, but the high-quality bamboo fabric really sets these apart from similar lower-priced ones. The material is buttery soft and keeps my body temperature from overheating at night. I also love that the shorts have pockets, which have helped me tremendously postpartum...I can still carry my phone and monitor while holding the baby."

Fast Facts

  • Material: 95 percent viscose from bamboo, 5 percent spandex
  • Sizes: xs to xxxl

Best Stretchy Cooling Pajamas

5. BedHead PJs Shorty Stretch Jersey Set

BedHead PJs

Assistant commerce editor Natalie LaBarbera highly recommends Stretch Jersey PJ sets from BedHead PJs."The organic cotton is super breathable but still has some weight to it so I'm comfortable (as a super hot sleeper) in them year-round," she says. She likes that the brands have "so many fun prints to choose from," but says to act fast if you see one you like, because the popular limited-edition patterns sell out quickly.

Fast Facts

  • Material: 93 percent organic cotton, 7 percent elastane
  • Sizes: xs to 3x

Best Sleep Shorts

6. Hello Mello Beauty Sleep Satin Pajama Shorts

Hello Mello

"I'm obsessed with my satin PJ's from Hello Mello," says assistand editor of branded content Madeline Merinuk. "They're really cooling and fit perfectly—aka no riding up in the middle of the night, no itchy fabric, etc. I get sweaty when I sleep (sorry if TMI, lol) but I never wake up feeling uncomfortable with these." Not least of all, Merinuk praises the brand's "many adorable patterns."

  • Material: polyester
  • Sizes: small/medium to x-large/xx-large

Most Comfortable Design

7. Lunya Washable Silk Tulip Back Set

Lunya

Silk is naturally thermoregulating; along with the fiber's strength and beauty, it's one of the reasons silk is considered a luxury fabric. This silk set ups the comfort for hot sleepers by a flattering and cooling design—it has a tulip crisscross back on the loose-fit tank, and a matching tulip hem on the shorts. That means the pieces let air flow more freely than on traditional tank top sets. In nine vivid colors, I'm at a loss for which one I like best. One tip: I size up for maximum comfort when I'm wearing Lunya.

  • Material: Mulberry silk
  • Sizes: xs to xl

You can definitely buy the matching short-sleeve top ($54) to wear with these cropped pants from Soma, but my hack for maximum cooling is to wear the pants with the brand's cooling V-neck tank ($44) or one of my favorite cotton tanks. These pants are ace because they're made of a rayon that its super thin, has a bit of stretch and always feels cool to the touch. I like to wear these when I am going to be hosting or entertaining and want to be a little more covered up than in shorts, but still want max breeziness. Also, these come in 13 prints to choose from!

Fast Facts

  • Material: 93 percent rayon, 7 percent spandex
  • Sizes: xs to xxl

Best Seersucker Nightie

9. Lake Alice Nightgown

Lake

There's a reason seersucker is practically the uniform of the Deep South—the all-cotton puckered weave is cool and non-clinging. Like linen, its supposed to wrinkle, so there's no trying to look crisp when the humidity and temperature both rise. The simplicity of this nightie, basically just a flared silhouette with a faux tie, ruffle and pockets, recalls retro house dresses. And Lake makes nighties in the best fabrics, including this fine Pima cotton.

Fast Facts

  • Material: Pima cotton
  • Sizes: xxs to xxl

A camisole-and-shorts set is the next best thing to sleeping naked, but I don't want one that's got lots of itchy lace or that's too restrictive. Nor do I want one that is so baggy that all that extra fabric seems too bulky (and therefore hot). This set is just right, and is made of breathable wood pulp-derived fibers that wash up well. And the little whipstitch border is a little decoration that's not annoying, even on sensitive skin like mine.

Fast Facts

  • Material: 95 percent tencel modal, 5 percent spandex
  • Sizes: x-small to x-large

Best for Chest Support

11. 32 Degrees Women’s Cool Flowy Bra Dress

32 Degrees

This sleep dress is made of the same lightweight sweat-wicking fabric that workout T-shirts are made from. It has shelf cups that support the bosom without underwire, and a pull-on silhouette that's loose and full cut. The only thing this dress—which is not at all sheer, so it can be worn as a sundress, btw—doesn't have is pockets, but I like that since it means less fabric to bunch up next to me in bed.

Fast Facts

  • Material: 100 percent polyester
  • Sizes: x-small to xx-large
