I like to think of myself as someone who does not need help shopping. This is both professionally true (I literally shop and write about clothes for a living) and personally delusional. So when I booked a Personal Styling Appointment (PSA) at the Aritzia store in Flatiron, part of me assumed I’d politely nod through the experience and leave convinced I could’ve done it better myself. Boy was I wrong. My session with fashion stylist Anna Young was equal parts efficient and fun. After a quick chat about our kids (who are around the same age), we were off to the races. She understood my style almost immediately, pulling summer pieces that felt very me, along with a few wildcard picks I never would’ve reached for on my own. Below, the items that had me seriously considering a wardrobe refresh.

I was immediately drawn to this satin maxi halter dress because of how beautifully the fabric moves and laid on my skin. The satin almost glides over the body, while the halter cut gives it a sharp, minimal silhouette. I have a wedding to attend next month, and this is for sure a top pick. It’s true, sometimes simple really is the strongest statement.

I haven’t genuinely loved wearing denim shorts since my high school days, which is saying a lot because the early 2000s had us all making questionable choices. But this cotton top paired with the Dame short from Agolde may have changed my mind. I’m fully on board with the longer-shorts revival—they feel fresher, more flattering and infinitely more grown-up than the cutoffs of my youth. I especially loved the relaxed fit, which gives me tons of room to breathe.

This dress is the answer to every “I have nothing to wear” summer dilemma. I was drawn to its clean lines and body-skimming fit, which hugs in all the right places without feeling restrictive, which is major when it’s over 80 degrees. The deep navy shade is also such a nice alternative to black—rich, and just a little softer for summer.

This fitted satin dress has become my designated going-out dress. I’ll admit, I initially worried the pink might lean a little too Pepto-Bismol, but I was pleasantly surprised by how beautiful it looked against my darker skin tone. The satin is airy and moves with me beautifully, giving it that fluid, slinky feel without clinging too much. And perhaps most importantly: it’s not see-through which is a win for a pale pink satin dress.

Agolde Indra Short, Interlock Brickell T-Shirt and New York Knicks Hat

Aritzia

Knicks fans have become instantly recognizable this summer, and apparently, so has their merch. I’ll fully admit I’m a bandwagon fan, but I do love a good casual look, so this outfit spoke to me immediately. The New York Knicks hat was the real hero here (and thank goodness I found one at Aritzia, because they were sold out everywhere else in NYC), while the Agolde Indra Short delivered the perfect relaxed fit—loose through the leg but somehow fitting perfectly around my waist. I paired them with the Interlock Brickell t-shirt, the entire look is exactly what I want to wear on an off-duty summer day.

This look won me over immediately, especially the heather gray color. Confession: loungewear can be tricky for me because if it’s too comfortable, it starts reading like straight-up pajamas. This set nails that sweet spot. The pants are mid-rise with a drawcord waist and a slim fit, and they’re made from a heavyweight version of Aritzia’s beloved HomeStretch Rib fabric, so they’re body-hugging without feeling restrictive. They also sit perfectly on my waist. Full disclosure: the second I got home, I changed right back into this outfit, and can confirm it pairs exceptionally well with a bowl of ice cream on my sofa.

I love to dress up, but a great tee-and-jeans combo will never fail me. Once both legs were in the jeans, I immediately understood the hype around the Annina. The leg is relaxed and roomy without swallowing my size 4 waist whole, and the high-rise waist hits in exactly the right place. As for the soft cotton tee? I got a puppy about a month ago, so I’m fully in my dog-mom era, and the graphic instantly reminded me of my fur child, Banks, which made me love it even more.

Everyone is selling a vest right now. Most of them are fine. Some give maître d’. This one, however, feels genuinely cool. I especially love the opening at the bottom, which breaks up the silhouette and keeps it from feeling too stiff. The cropped version of the effortless pant was also a win for me. I love that the length makes it easy to style with either a heel or a flat—no tailoring or weird bunching at the ankle. Together, the set felt sharp but still fun.

The older I get, the more I appreciate clothes that remove decision fatigue, which is perhaps the least sexy thing I’ve ever said about fashion. Thankfully, this dress doesn’t sacrifice style in the name of convenience. The higher waist makes the dress skim beautifully, and the maxi length adds a hint of lift when you walk. It’s feminine and easy, and one person already asked, “Wait, where is that from?”

This linen set reminded me why I keep crawling back to the fabric every summer, despite our toxic relationship. I love the look of linen (I mean, nothing says, “I summer somewhere coastal” quite like it), but I hate how it wrinkles approximately 14 seconds after I put it on. Still, I’m willing to suffer for the aesthetic. I was especially into the pants. The relaxed mid-rise fit with the drawcord waist makes them incredibly comfortable, while the wide leg gives beautiful movement. I also appreciated the inseam pockets (because yes, pockets matter) and the full length, which hit right at the ground with flat shoes. Color me obsessed!

Lightwell Dress Crepette

This Lightwell polyester dress has been the most adult thing I tried on all day, and I mean that as a compliment. Made from Japanese crepe fabric, it drapes beautifully and moves with my body without clinging in weird or unforgiving places. But the real selling point? It doesn’t wrinkle. At all! It’s also machine washable, which absolutely sealed the deal for me. No dry cleaner, no special care instructions. Just a chic dress that asks very little of me.
