There's no shortage of options when it comes to workout leggings. It seems like the number of athleisure brands climbs every day, and with it, the range of styles in every price point, size, color, pattern and degree of supportiveness. But two of the most popular, which I happen to have in my own collection, are undoubtedly Alo's Airlift leggings ($128) and lululemon's Align styles ($98). On the surface, they may seem similar, but the truth is, these leggings are super different when it comes to the level of support they have and how they feel on your body.

So which one’s right for you? Here's what you should know about each style before deciding which one to add to cart.

Everything to Know About Alo Airlift Leggings

  • Smooth fabric
  • High-quality

What I Don't Like

  • Not very breathable
  • Light colors can be see-through

Alo

Alo's Airlift leggings are easily the most supportive pair I have in my workout wear collection. And it's no wonder why, considering they're designed with a high-compression fabric (which is a blend of 82 percent polyester and 18 percent elastane) and have a snug, compressive cut, too. For me, this did make them run small (I went up a size from my usual at Alo for the pair shown above), though other Alo shoppers say in their reviews that they fit true to size, so it might be worth trying a few options for your first pair. (Alo offers free returns, provided the leggings have the original tags attached and are sent back within 30 days of purchase.) The leggings also come in both 7/8 (24.5-inch inseam) and full length (28-inch inseam) fits and sizes XXS through XL. I found that the 7/8 option hits perfectly at my ankles for my 5'2'' height.

As for what it's like actually wearing the Airlift leggings, they have a thicker material than most, which adds to the support they give but also cuts down on breathability, and they have a super smooth feel that I love for both exercise and leisurewear. I also appreciate the wide, double-layered waistband, though it does sometimes roll down and require adjusting during my workout classes. Another thing worth calling out is that, in the past, I've picked up a light pink color of these leggings that were a bit too see-through for me to feel comfortable wearing out, so you'll want to opt for a darker color when you shop them.

Overall, I'd say these leggings are definitely worth adding to your own collection (keeping the above in mind), especially if you regularly tackle high-intensity/high-impact workouts that require more support, or are looking for a good go-to pair for colder weather.

Everything to Know About lululemon Align Leggings

What We Like

  • Super soft fabric
  • Waistband stays in place
  • High-quality

What We Don't Like

  • Might not be supportive enough for some high-intensity workouts

lululemon

As someone who mainly wears workout leggings to low-impact classes like barre or for daily walks with my dog, I often opt for lululemon's Align pants for their super soft feel and stretchy, light fabric. This material is made from 81 percent nylon and 19 percent lycra elastane, and it has a bit more of a textured feel to it than the Airlift fabric. These ones also come in multiple lengths, including 23-, 25-, 28- and 31-inch inseams and sizes 0 through 20. (I usually opt for the 23- or 25-inch and both work well with my height, depending on where I want them to hit).

I love that these ones have a barely there feel that feels breathable enough to wear running errands on hot days too or even attending a heated Pilates class. Just keep in mind that if you do more intense activities, you might find yourself wanting some more support. The waistband on the Aligns stays in place well for me, and similarly to Alo's designs, I've had pairs that kept their place in my rotation for years because the quality holds up so well, even with weekly wears and washes.

The Bottom Line

Choosing between Alo's Airlift leggings and lululemon's Align leggings really comes down to your preferences when it comes to material and fit, along with the type of workouts you plan to wear them for. Value support and thick fabric? You'll want to go with Alo. Prefer something soft and lightweight? Lululemon will be for you. Or maybe, like me, you'll want to have both in your collection to switch between depending on what your mood is and plans are for the day—it never hurts to have options.
