Netflix's #2 Movie Is a Mystery Everyone’s Watching But Not Everyone’s Loving

To binge or not to binge?

When it comes to Netflix shows, new titles drop all the time but not every release makes it into that coveted Top 10. The usual assumption? If something climbs the ranks, it must be good, right? That might’ve been the case with Boots, Netflix’s recent breakout hit. But if Terror Comes Knocking taught us anything, and now Taken in Plain Sight, it’s that popularity doesn’t always equate.

While Taken in Plain Sight is new to Netflix, it actually made its debut on Lifetime back in 2024 before landing on the streamer. The film centers on Abby, a mother who, after months of relentless searching, becomes convinced she’s tracked down the person who took her daughter.

When the authorities dismiss her as just another grieving parent spiraling into obsession, she decides to take things into her own hands. What follows is a twisty journey that unearths the unsettling truth behind her daughter’s disappearance. The movie stars Tennille Read and Sameer Jafar.

Right now, it’s sitting at number two on Netflix’s Top 10 movies list (just behind the emotional doc The Perfect Neighbor) and I have to assume people are hate-watching because the reviews are brutal.

"Beyond bad Horrible absolute garbage!!! Watched for 30 min!!! Shame on you Netflix," one reviewer posted on Rotten Tomatoes. Another added, "Talk about some wildly awful Hallmark film. This was that. Insanely predictable."

A third chimed in, "I really wanted this movie to run deeper than a kiddie pool. It started out with a decent enough back-story & then makes very broad assumptions that the audience isn’t clever enough to see right through."

Still, not everyone was ready to toss it into the trash pile. Some viewers actually appreciated it for what it was because, let’s be honest, if you’re pressing play on a Lifetime movie, you kinda know what you’re getting into.

"In an era crowded with formulaic thrillers, 'Taken In Plain Sight' dares to dig deeper," another viewer wrote. "It’s sharp, socially resonant, and breathlessly intense. This is the kind of film that keeps you thinking long after you’ve left the theater—and checking over your shoulder more than once. Must-watch for fans of thrillers with substance."

And over on X and TikTok (above), fans were surprisingly into it, calling it “so good” and saying their “eyeballs were glued” to the TV.

"I just finished Taken in Plain Sight—it was good. Netflix got some fire right now," someone else shared.

So, at the end of the day, the real question is: Is Taken in Plain Sight worth the watch? With a runtime of just an hour and 25 minutes, I’d say—why not?

Taken in Plain Sight is streaming now on Netflix.
