Netflix has done it again. And by “again,” I mean they’ve dropped another overnight hit. Not too long ago, there was the documentary Aileen: Queen of the Serial Killers, the suspense thriller A House of Dynamite and now a period drama that’s shot straight to the top of Netflix’s charts, snagging the number one spot. The name? Death by Lightning.

Death by Lightning is a limited drama series based on the true story of James Garfield, the 20th president of the United States, and Charles Guiteau, the man who was both Garfield’s biggest admirer and his assassin.

The four-episode series draws from Candice Millard’s 2011 nonfiction book Destiny of the Republic: A Tale of Madness, Medicine, and the Murder of a President. Fun fact about the title: it actually comes from one of Garfield’s quotes: “Assassination can be no more guarded against than death by lightning. And it is best not to worry too much about either one.”

The cast is also pretty impressive. Michael Shannon steps into Garfield’s shoes, while Matthew Macfadyen (Succession, Pride & Prejudice) plays Charles Guiteau. Nick Offerman (Parks and Recreation), Betty Gilpin (GLOW), Bradley Whitford (The Handmaid’s Tale), Shea Whigham (Boardwalk Empire) and more round out the talented lineup.

Since its November 6 debut, Death by Lightning has already racked up glowing audience reviews and an 88% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

“Even with just four episodes, this is among the best television of the year, an optimistic indicator of the power of this kind of storytelling to revisit history in a creative and entirely worthwhile way,” one reviewer wrote.

Others praised the acting as “Oscar-worthy” and described the series as “very well done” and a “wild ride.”

So if you're ready to buckle up, Death by Lightning is streaming now on Netflix.
