I Visited My Boomer Dad for a Week and We Spent Every Night Bingeing This Angela Bassett Show

The plotlines are bonkers (but we didn't care)

Growing up as a millennial, I spent the early '90s watching Murder, She Wrote. My boomer dad? He was more of a Walker, Texas Ranger kind of guy.

So I was more than a little surprised when I visited my dad in Florida for a week and we found a show that we could actually agree on. In fact, not only did we agree on it, but we spent every night bingeing it (no, we didn't finish it as there are a whopping nine seasons and counting).

The show in question? 9-1-1, which is currently airing on ABC and Hulu.

The action-packed series follows the LAFD, LAPD and L.A.'s 911 operators as they try to save the day in the face of insurmountable odds (see: the "bee-nado" from season eight). And while this might sound more like a show meant for my Texas Ranger dad, there are a few reasons it's perfectly suited for me as well.

First of all, it's a Ryan Murphy show. As a gay millennial, I've been consistently drawn to Murphy's drama-filled offerings, from Glee to American Horror Story to Pose. Once again, the man has delivered a riveting (if at times ridiculous) piece of television.

And then there's the cast, which features a slew of my favorites. I'm talking Angela Bassett, Connie Britton, Peter Krause, Jennifer Love Hewitt...plus, a bunch of very pretty people who I don't yet know by name (another Ryan Murphy specialty).

But there's another reason my dad and I both love this show about first responders: We were both EMS workers in a past life. My dad was a volunteer EMT for decades, before becoming an ER nurse. I followed in his footsteps as far as the EMT part goes, spending my late teens riding with him on the local ambulance squad. Though we never spoke about it specifically while we watched episode after episode of 9-1-1, it was if we were silently re-bonding over a shared part of our history.

And it was nice. Instead of watching Angela Lansbury alone in my room, I got to watch Angela Bassett on the couch with my dad. And it was more than a little exciting for both of us when the bee-nado arrived...
