I'm an Entertainment Editor Who Guesses Every Movie Twist Correctly—Well, Except This One

I seriously missed the boat on this one

As an entertainment editor, one might say I watch too many movies (I would never say that, but one might). And, as a result, that annoying thing happens while I'm watching films where I almost always know how events are going to play out. "The neighbor is the killer." "She's secretly his sister." "He was dead the whole time." My partner hates it (I've stopped spoiling things for him, but I do announce "I know how it ends" about halfway through, and that's when I start to get death stares).

Recently, I took in a screening of the big new blockbuster hit Jurassic World: Rebirth. I saw the film in 3D, something you need not do (it added absolutely nothing). The movie is fun and action-packed. And while the plot is a bit far-fetched, I certainly didn't mind—it's a movie about dinosaurs after all. All in all, I liked it. That is, I liked it until I got to the end.

About 30 minutes into the film, I leaned over and (obnoxiously) whispered into my partner's ear, "I know how it ends." He angrily thrust the popcorn bucket my way and dove fist first into the pretzel bites. But, lo and behold, the ending arrived and I was...wrong?

Was I mad I got this one wrong? No. In fact, it's nice to genuinely be surprised. Do I think my ending is better than the one that played out on screen? Absolutely. And it seems like the filmmakers missed out on a major plot twist opportunity. Let me explain (warning: spoilers ahead).

So, the whole plot of the movie revolves around the collection of DNA from three different live dinosaurs. The heroes (and secret villains) set off to retrieve the DNA, leaving a trail of bodies in their wake. But the movie starts with an entirely different dinosaur altogether: a hybrid mutant dino that contains the DNA of multiple dinosaurs. It's big, it's bad and it's not going to make another appearance until the third act.

Naturally, my prediction was that the heroes would either fail to collect all three samples of DNA OR they would succeed, only to have the DNA accidentally destroyed. All hope would seem to be lost, until the appearance of the hybrid dinosaur, at which point someone would realize they could get a sample from the mutant that would be just as good, since the DNA is a mish-mosh of multiple dinos. Twist ending!

And yet, instead of forcing Scar-Jo and J.Bailey to retrieve DNA from the insane killer mutant dinosaur, the film plays out...exactly as they said it would. No twists. No surprises (not even from the mutant dinosaur since we knew it existed from the start of the film). They simply succeed in collecting the DNA... an okay ending, I suppose.

Again, I'm not mad I got it wrong. I just wish the filmmakers had consulted me on things.
