It may take a while though

When it comes to beloved movies, there are really only two camps: the “it’s perfect, don’t touch it” crowd and the “we need a sequel now” camp. In today’s reboot-loving world (see: And Just Like That, The Devil Wears Prada 2, and that blink-and-you-missed-it Suits revival), it’s no surprise that whispers of a Crazy Rich Asians sequel had fans (myself included) feeling all kinds of hopeful. And now? We’ve got a real update, straight from one of the stars.

While hosting an event for Citi’s new Strata Elite Card on July 30, Henry Golding gave PureWow the scoop on where Crazy Rich Asians 2 stands. Spoiler: it’s not not happening.

“They’re trying to put it together,” Golding shared. “I think there’s so many challenges when it comes to something so big and iconic like that, so hopefully, we can kind of piece it together and get something on the table.”

Translation: it's still in the works—but it’s going to take time.

Golding added that the pressure is definitely on to get it right for fans. “You have to do them justice,” he said. “You can’t come out with some crap.” (Chef’s kiss on that honesty.)

For a quick refresher: Crazy Rich Asians hit theaters in 2018 and was an instant cultural moment. Directed by Jon M. Chu (yes, Wicked’s Jon M. Chu) and based on Kevin Kwan’s bestselling novel, the film follows Rachel Chu (Constance Wu), a Chinese-American professor who travels to Singapore with her boyfriend Nick (Golding) only to find out—surprise—he’s basically Singaporean royalty.

The cast? Stacked. In addition to Golding and Wu, it includes Gemma Chan, Awkwafina, Ken Jeong, Lisa Lu and Michelle Yeoh. Basically, a dream team.

The film grossed nearly $240 million worldwide on a $30 million budget, scored a Critics Choice Award for Best Comedy, a SAG Award for Outstanding Cast and currently holds a 91 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. So yeah, there’s a lot riding on a sequel.

While we may still be waiting a bit longer for Crazy Rich Asians 2, you can catch the original streaming online.
