Viola Davis Kicks Butt and Takes Names as President in Wild New Action-Thriller

This looks so good

With over three decades in the industry, Viola Davis has played just about every kind of role imaginable. From the powerhouse blues singer Ma Rainey to former First Lady Michelle Obama—even voicing a chameleon in Kung Fu Panda 4—she’s proven her range time and time again. And in her latest film, she’s adding “action hero president” to the list.

Davis stars in G20, Prime Video’s upcoming political thriller, and the newly released trailer promises a high-stakes, adrenaline-pumping ride.

Before we dive into the action, here’s a quick breakdown of the plot: When the G20 summit is attacked, U.S. President Danielle Sutton (Davis) becomes the prime target. After narrowly escaping capture, she must use her wits, combat skills and sheer determination to protect her family, defend her country and outmaneuver the enemy—all while leading a room full of world leaders.

Now, onto the trailer. It wastes no time setting the stage, opening with the ominous line, “Madam President, we have a situation.” We’re briefly introduced to Sutton’s family, including her husband (Anthony Anderson) and daughter (Marsai Martin), before things take a turn for the worse.

Sutton and her family are in Cape Town, South Africa, for the annual G20 summit, but her eldest daughter Serena (Martin) seems more focused on pushing boundaries than diplomacy. Just as Sutton tries to keep a watchful eye on her, chaos erupts. A terrorist group storms the summit, enacting a sinister plan called “Project Deepfake.”

“To the governments watching, I’ve taken the G20 by force,” the film’s villain, Rutledge (played by The Boys star Antony Starr), announces via livestream. “When we launch Project Deepfake, we will reset the world’s financial markets.”

Big mistake. What Rutledge and his crew don’t realize is that separating Sutton from her family has only fueled her survival instincts. What follows is a pulse-pounding sequence of Davis kicking, shooting and—yes—pan-frying her way through enemies. “If you want to live, you’ll follow my lead,” she tells the other world leaders, proving she’s not just a figurehead—she’s a force to be reckoned with.

The cast is stacked, featuring Ramón Rodríguez, Douglas Hodge, Elizabeth Marvel, Sabrina Impacciatore, Christopher Farrar and of course, Davis, Anderson, Martin and Starr.

The G20 trailer does exactly what it should: leave viewers wanting more. The only downside? Having to wait until April 10 for G20 to drop on Prime Video. Fingers crossed for a few more teasers to hold us over until then.
