This Intense Thriller Just Hit Theaters—but Critics and Audiences Totally Disagree About Whether It's Great or Terrible

The action-packed movie stars Mark Wahlberg

I love an intense thriller as much as the next person (I can't say enough about how good the number one movie on Netflix, a thriller, actually is). But sometimes the critics' reviews and audience responses don't quite align on whether a new film is a must-see or a must-skip—and that seems to be the case with the Mark Wahlberg thrill-ride Flight Risk.

Directed by Mel Gibson (who I guess we're supposed to just be okay with now? hard pass from me...), Flight Risk follows a pilot (Wahlberg), an air marshal (Michelle Dockery) and a fugitive (Topher Grace) as they fly over Alaska. Per the trailer, someone on board has a major secret...

So is Flight Risk worth the watch? Well, it depends on who you ask. According to the Rotten Tomatoes critics' score, the movie is a 'rotten tomato' indeed. In fact, critics gave it a measly 26 percent rating. However, audiences seemed to like it quite a deal better than that. The "popcornmeter" which measures audience response has the film at 63 percent. (If this were high school, that would be a "D," but it's still significantly higher than 26.)

The action-packed movie hit theaters back on January 24. And according to last weekend's ticket numbers, it was sitting at number five in terms of box office haul (behind Dog Man, Companion, Mufasa and One of Them Days).

So depending on who you believe, the movie may or may not be worth a shot. Either way, it's currently playing in theaters everywhere.
