Denzel Washington’s movies have continued to stand the test of time.

The latest example? None other than 2018’s The Equalizer 2, the second installment of the popular series that saw Washington reinventing himself as the stoic action hero badass known as Robert McCall—the man with little regard for human life when you’ve crossed him. Once you’ve knocked out the first film, you can make your way over to this gritty sequel, which currently holds the fourth spot on Netflix’s Top 10 list nearly seven years after its release. Also starring Pedro Pascal, Ashton Sanders, Orson Bean and more, the film centers around McCall on a mission for revenge after his enemies kill his best friend and former colleague. These individuals, however, aren’t just your average “gangsters”—they’re highly-trained assassins who will stop at nothing to destroy McCall and get him off their tail.

Upon its release, The Equalizer 2 grossed $190 million at the box office, and while the reviews from critics were mixed, the film was well received by moviegoers for its intense plot and riveting action scenes. There was also, expectedly, a lot of praise for Washington’s performance as McCall, which has gone on to become more appreciated with time, as this film has entered a John Wick-level cult classic franchise status over the past decade. “The Equalizer 2 is very similar to its predecessor, but the editing got better and the film is much more satisfying emotionally. The main character is definitely the same and didn't change at all, but that was never the point. He is a protector and his morals are near perfect. The plot line with Sammy was my favourite part, the last scene with him is my favourite scene so far in the franchise,” writes one Rotten Tomatoes audience reviewer.

"The Equalizer 2 is a sequel that's far more brilliant & nuanced than critics gave it credit for," adds another.

As for my opinion, the only thing stopping The Equalizer 2 from being the best film in the series is The Equalizer 3, because it does, indeed, get even better.
