Mark your calendars

If you have young kids, then you’re probably familiar with Bluey. Although it’s geared toward children, the content is surprisingly entertaining for adults (just ask my 28-year-old colleague). The show previously made headlines for its record-breaking 30-minute episode, which solidified Chilli as the ultimate mom icon

Today, The Walt Disney Company announced that it’s teaming up with BBC Studios to produce the first-ever Bluey movie. Unfortunately, the studio didn’t share much information about the plot, but it did confirm that both voice actors Melanie Zanetti (Chilli Heeler) and David McCormack (Bandit Heeler) will reprise their roles.

This detail immediately caught my attention because Zanetti and McCormack voice Bluey’s parents. Will the film focus more on them (and less on Bluey)? Or did the studio purposely leave Bluey out of the announcement because the actor’s identity has never been revealed? Only time will tell.

The Bluey movie is currently in production, but since it’s an animated feature, it will take—wait for it—years to hit theaters. The estimated premiere date is sometime in 2027, followed by a streaming release on Disney+.

The film will be written and directed by Bluey creator Joe Brumm. The showrunner revealed that the movie was inspired by the success of the 30-minute episode

“I really enjoyed the experience of working with a longer format on ‘The Sign’ in Series 3, so going even further with a feature film feels like a natural extension of that,” he said in a press release. “I’ve always thought Bluey deserved a theatrical movie. I want this to be an experiential event for the whole family to enjoy together.”

Brumm continued, “I’m excited to continue to partner with Cecilia Persson, Tom Fussell and the team at BBC Studios, and Dana Walden, Alan Bergman and Disney to bring this new Bluey story to the big screen.”

2027 can’t come soon enough.
